Star Wars Episode 9 – Everything We Know

After the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it is time to think about the future and the Episode 9 which follows. The new movie is scheduled for 2019, and this is what we know so far about the new Skywalker trilogy. Be careful as spoilers will follow.

Star Wars Episode 9 Release Date

The movie was supposed to be released on May 24, but it has been postponed until December 20, 2019. The reason for this delay is the production issues that took place in August and September of the last year, plus the new director and screenwriter joined the crew which also influenced the date.

In the meantime, Mark Hamill, the actor who plays Luke Skywalker started with the countdown by posting a photo on Twitter.

The Title

At this point, we have to refer to the new film as the Episode 9 because the title is unknown. However, we will not wait long before the title of the movie is announced and this should happen in the upcoming months. We can only speculate, but we will not give it a try.

Director

Initially, the movie was supposed to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, who created the blockbuster Jurassic World. Even though he was expected to do a fantastic job, he was replaced by J.J. Abrams, the man behind The Force Awakens.

Writers

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Thorne, who is famous for working with J.K. Rowling on the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, began writing for the script for the new Star Wars Episode 9 in August last year. However, in September the same year, Thorne got replaced by the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Argo, Chris Terrio and he, together with J.J. Abrams, is working on the story.

Shooting and Production

According to J.J. Abrams, the shooting for the new film is going to start at the end of July, as he said in an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Abrams confirmed that the script has been finished. He said: “We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July. Sometimes having the script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have.”

Meanwhile, John Boyega also claimed that he would start his work in July, but he admitted that he hadn’t read the script. Speaking on The One Show, he said: “I don’t know a thing, but I know I start filming in July. They’re prepping and planning. JJ has a script, but I just haven’t read it yet.”

Star Wars Episode 9 Characters

At this point, we are not sure whether Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie are going to appear as Maz Kanata and Captain Phasma, respectively. They expressed doubts at the beginning of this year with Lupita saying: “I don’t know yet. I’ll know soon.” On the other hand, Christie pointed out: “In truth I don’t know… that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now. And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat. It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is.”

What we know for sure is that the following actors will appear: Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, John Boyega as Finn, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Billie Lourd as Lieutenant Connix and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. What we cannot tell is whether Benicio Del Toro is going to appear as DJ, but it is highly likely that he’ll return. This is what he said: “I hope that he’s around because I love playing him.”

Besides Gwendoline Christie, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson addressed the possible return of Captain Phasma. We are not sure whether this character is alive or not but this is what Johnson had to say: “Phasma is the Kenny from South Park of this series.” If you have never watched South Park (that person exists?), you should know that Kenny is the one who dies and appears in the next episode over and over again. This means that although Phasma is presumed dead, we might see the character in the new film.

It has been agreed upon that the directors would not use CGI to recreate Carrie Fisher in the sequel, following her death at the end of 2016. This means that her character will not be featured at all. To adjust the storyline, there is a possibility that there will be a wide gap between the Last Jedi and Episode 9 and I am sure that they will mention Fisher’s character sometime during the film.

Meanwhile, Andy Serkis (Snoke) told The Hollywood Reporter: “I could quite happily — I’d be very happy to extend Snoke’s life for sure.” Currently, we don’t know whether Snoke would be involved in the upcoming film.

Will Luke come back as a Force Ghost?

According to Mark Hamill, yes. But he could be only teasing his fans, which wouldn’t be the first time he has done it. But Rian Johnson said: “I don’t know where the next movie is going to go. J.J. (Abrams) and Chris Terrio are writing it right now. But it seemed like the potential of Luke crossing into a new realm, that offers exciting possibilities for the role he plays in the coming chapter. No one’s ever really gone. Again, I’m not writing the script, so I don’t know. But as a fan, I would hope [he returns].”

What Will We Learn About Rey’s Parents?

Source:youtube

The question of Rey’s parents remains open after Kylo Ren told her in The Last Jedi that they were “nobody.” Johnson spoke of Kylo Ren’s revelation with HuffPost: “The easy thing would be, ‘Yes, your parents are so and so and here’s your place in the world. There you go.’ The hardest thing she could hear would be: ‘No, you’re not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You’re going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet.’ ”

There is a strong possibility that the question of Rey’s parentage will be explored in Episode 9. But Johnson announced that he was not the writer and that he didn’t know much about what to expect.

But at the same time, Johnson said this as well: “With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense.”

Episode 9 Plot

Source:youtube

We have some hints, but not much is known about the plot of the new movie. Daisy Ridley cried when she learned about Rey’s fate in the draft of the script. SNL actor Bobby Moynihan said he introduced Ridley to Colin Trevorrow, the former director. Bobby explained: “I introduced him to Daisy Ridley at the SNL after-party. I saw a moment where she said, ‘What happens to me?’ And he said, ‘Do you want to do this now?’ And she said, ‘Yeah,’ and they went off into a corner of the bar and he whispered it into her ear and she started crying.”

This could have meant anything, and there is a high chance that the story has changed since Trevorrow was replaced. Another individual who addressed the plot was John Boyega, who said: “Regardless of where the story goes – and I haven’t read it, by the way – is going to be all-out war, so I know that I’m going to have to do all I can and train for that.”

Episode 9 Without Carrie Fisher

Source:youtube

Carrie Fisher was supposed to play a key role in Episode 9. But after her death, the fans got worried that she would be recreated with CGI, just like Peter Cushing was recreated in Rogue One. However, the production company stated the following: “We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumour circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa. Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honour everything she gave to Star Wars.”

Latest Rumors

There is a theory saying that Han Solo’s ship will not survive Episode 9. Kevin Smith said: “They killed Han Solo in The Force Awakens. They killed Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. Sadly, Carrie has passed, so they have to deal with the Princess Leia of it all. But what do you think is the next big loss? I think it’s the Falcon. That would really rip all of our hearts out…

“They’ll never kill Chewie,” he continued, “because you could be Chewie for 400 years. It’s a guy in a suit. They can’t kill any of the droids, that could be anybody and stuff. But they’ve got to kill something that makes us go ‘No! I love that from my childhood.’ ”

Who Else Joined?

According to several reports, Paul Inglis, the art director of Blade Runner 2049 joined the crew of Star Wars: Episode 9, only raising the stakes for the film. He has had a lot of experience and some of the movies and shows he worked on included Skyfall, Game of Thrones and Prometheus.

Will John Williams score Episode 9?

Source:movieweb.com

John Williams has scored all Star Wars movies with the exception of Anthology films, and now he is 85? The question is whether he would continue playing his part? And we got the answer from Williams himself. Here is what he said:

“I would very much like to complete that,” he said. “I don’t think you can retire from writing. I feel very lucky, and the work that I do doesn’t depend on much. If your vision’s still good, and your hands – I have no arthritis in my hands and I play the piano very easily – I don’t think there’s any reason to deprive oneself of the fun of working. Music is so rewarding.”

Williams pointed out that this would be his last Star Wars film: “We know JJ Abrams is preparing one [Star Wars movie] now that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward to it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me.”
