Man Kills Self During Watchmen
Apparently a 24 year old man from Eugene, Oregon shot and killed himself last night during a late screening of Watchmen. According to reports, the incident happened inside the Regal Cinemas in Valley River Center at 12:15am. There were 10 other people in the theater at the time. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Not to be insensitive, but I can’t help but wonder a few things. Was it planned? What part of the movie was it? And if it wasn’t planned, did the guy really think the movie was that bad…
Open Letter from Watchmen Screenwriter Online
It’s been nearly a week since the release of Watchmen, and now, HardcoreNerdity has published an open letter from Watchmen screenwriter David Hayter in which he talks about the general reaction to the movie so far, and asks moviegoers to give the movie a chance.
I saw the movie opening night and will agree with a lot of what the guy says. I’m one of those people who wonders how shitty movies get made time and time again, catering to the lowest common denominator, while movies like Watchmen only come around once in a blue moon.
Personally, I look to the release a movie like Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and wonder how a movie like that would ever get made today — or even find an audience. The movie had balls and people weren’t afraid of that. Why are things so different now?

AN OPEN LETTER FROM A WATCHMEN SCREENWRITER
So it has been five months since I saw my first rough cut of WATCHMEN, and eight days since the premiere of the film I’ve been working on since late in the year 2000.
The reviews are out — Some outstanding, others rankly dismissive, which can be frustrating for the people involved, (though I can only speak for myself,) because I firmly believe that WATCHMEN, the novel, must be read through more than once to even have the faintest grip on it. Watchmen Tops Box Office
Watchmen was the top movie at the box office this weekend, earning a reported $55.6 million. Many are calling the film’s performance a disappointment considering estimates had the movie coming in anywhere from $60 – $70+ million. Unfortunately, for the Watchmen, although the movie opened strong with $25 million on Friday (including midnight screenings), the movie couldn’t hold onto the momentum, dropping 25% on Saturday and a projected 40% on Sunday.
