Star Trek 2 Rumours Begin

Even though it’s at least a year away from being filmed and there’s no director and no script, it’s time for the Star Trek 2 rumours to start hitting the ‘net.
The first comes from ComingSoon.net, which claims that an actor is already being targetted to play Khan, should he be the villain in the next movie. That actor is Nestor Carbonell.
Who is Nestor Carbonell you may ask? Well, if you asked me that question 2 hours ago, I wouldn’t have known who the hell you were talking about but I have now learned that the man known to me and millions of other Lost fans around the world as the mysterious and ageless Richard Alpert on the hit tv show is, in fact, Nestor Carbonell.
Carbonell does resemble, in some ways, a young Ricardo Montalban/Khan. Being on Lost, he certainly has a close connection with J.J. Abrams.
For now, we’ll treat this purely as internet craziness but it sure is an interesting idea that makes sense.
R2D2’s Star Trek Cameo
You may or may not know this but the special effect company ILM, owned by George Lucas, has a penchant for sticking R2D2 discreetly into some of the films on which they work. With Star Trek coming out on DVD and Blu-ray today, Gizmodo.com has found R2’s appearance in that movie. You can check out the screen shot down below of the little guy flying through space (click HERE for a larger version). They also stuck R2D2 in Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen earlier this summer. I’ve put that picture down below too, in case you have not seen it.
Pretty funny, if you ask me.

A Rapping Klingon
Here’s someone with a bit too much time on their hands – a person who has written popular songs in Klingon. The version below is Eminem’s Without Me. I heard a Queen song too. It was pretty funny for about the first two minutes. Anyways, if you want a bit of a chuckle check out the video below. You can also visit the nerd’s website HERE.
Star Trek Tops Box Office

Paramount’s J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $72.5 million. The opening makes Star Trek the most successful opening ever for a movie in the franchise and puts the reboot well on its way to being the most successful Trek movie ever released. The movie has earned $76.5 million since opening Thursday. The movie stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.
Dropping nearly 70% in 2nd place was X-Men Origins: Wolverine which earned $27 million. The movie, starring Hugh Jackman, has earned $129.6 million since opening last weekend.
In 3rd place was Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with $10.4 million. The romantic comedy, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, has earned $30.2 million in 2 weekends of release.

Movie Review: Star Trek

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek is the latest film to cover the history of the crew of the USS Enterprise, this time focusing on their early years before they took over the famed ship. We get a brief history of the childhoods of James T. Kirk and Spock before fate guides them on board the great ship and onto a historic partnership and friendship that will last many years to come. Kirk and Spock are joined by a very attractive crew that includes the younger versions of “Bones” McCoy, Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov. Their first order of business? To stop a Romulan mining vessel lead by Captain Nero first from blowing up the planet Vulcan and then from heading out to destroy the planet Earth. Star Trek stars the likes of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (McCoy), John Cho (Sulu), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and even includes a couple of surprises, at least to me. Read more
Paramount OKs Star Trek Sequel
Ahead of the May 8th release of Star Trek, Paramount has already given the go-ahead for a sequel, hiring Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to write the screenplay. Trek director J.J. Abrams will produce — although a decision has yet to be made on whether he’ll return to direct.
Naturally, a story isn’t set in stone this early in the game, but the plan is to have something available by the end of this year in hopes of beginning production for a summer 2011 release. Word is that the writing team will guage fan reaction to the first movie before moving forward with a story idea for the sequel.
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have been writing together for several years – with their resumes boasting such titles as The Island, Mission: Impossible III, Transformers and this summer’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. A Trek sequel would mark their 2nd collaboration with Damon Lindelof. The trio are currently writing Cowboys and Aliens for DreamWorks.
Final Star Trek Poster
MySpace has a “first look” at the final poster for Star Trek. Actually, the poster was online a couple of days ago at TrekMovie.com, but I wasn’t sure it was real. (Notice how the Trek title on this new final poster is italicized but the titles on the rest of the new international Trek posters aren’t.) Anyways, Paramount is confirming the poster is the real deal and are touting it as the “final theatrical poster” for the movie. Not a bad design, but not “final” material in my mind. Check it out below.

Star Trek opens May 8, 2009.
New Star Trek Posters

It seems every other news item these days is about a new movie poster. Today, we have some new international posters for Star Trek. The new posters pretty much take the “heads” featured in the previously released posters and crop them into new designs — except for one featuring a look at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge which is about to be destroyed by Magneto. Oh wait… that was another movie. Continue reading to check out the new posters. Read more
