Alice in Wonderland Tops Box Office Again

Alice in Wonderland was the top movie at the box office for a 2nd straight weekend earning another $62 million — a 46% drop from last weekend when it opened with $116 million. The movie has now earned $208.6 million.
Opening in 2nd place was Green Zone starring Matt Damon and directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie, produced on a reported budget of $100 million, opened with an estimated $14.5 million.
In 3rd spot was She’s Out of My League starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve. The romantic comedy opened with $9.6 million.
Not quite the same opening as a Twilight movie but Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson, opened in 4th place with $8.3 million. Not bad for a movie that likely would have tanked had it starred anybody else.
Rounding out the top 5 movies was Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie added another $8.1 million bringing its 4-week total to $108 million.
The only other new release to crack the top ten movies was the Fox Searchlight comedy Our Family Wedding starring Forest Whitaker, America Ferrera and Carlos Mencia.

Alice in Wonderland Review
In Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, it is 13 years after the first time a little girl followed a rabbit down a hole and ended up in a magical and mysterious world. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has grown into a young woman and on the day she is being courted by Hamish, in a rather odd ceremony, Alice runs away only to find herself once again following that same rabbit down another hole that leads her to the same wonderful land — a place she now believes she visited only in a dream. She meets the same cast of kooky characters including Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas), Absolem the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). It is there that she discovers that the place she once called Wonderland is not so wonderful anymore. Under the rule of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), Wonderland has turned into a dark and morbid community where both humans and animals alike are treated with disregard by the Queen, her sidekick the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover) and her trusty dragon Jabberwocky. It is up to Alice to restore order to Wonderland and return power to the much more esteemed White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the sister and adversary to the evil Red Queen. Read more
Depp and Paradis in My American Lover

Real life couple Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis will star together in My American Lover.
The project casts Paradis as Simone de Beauvoir, a 20th century French writer and philosopher most famous for writing The Second Sex which looked at the opression of women and contemporary feminism. Depp will play her lover, Nelson Algren, with whom she traveled through Latin America in 1949.
Depp is currently filming The Tourist in which he stars alongside Angelina Jolie.
Pirates 4 Adds Penelope Cruz
According to The Hollywood Reporter Penelope Cruz is close to signing on to join Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment in the Pirates series. Cruz will play a character that will, in many ways, be the female version of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and probably a great replacement for Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann.
Although little is known about the plot of Pirates 4, the story will revolve around the search for the Fountain of Youth.
Pirates 4 will reunite Cruz with Nine director Rob Marshall, the movie that garnered Cruz her second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2008 Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Pirates of the Carribean 4 is set to begin filming this summer in Hawaii and will hit theatres on May 11, 2011.
The Tourist Gets Director Again
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck will direct The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The director had left the project last year over “creative differences”. So either he got over his “creative differences” or he bit the bullet because he needed a payday. Either one works for me.
The movie stars Depp as an American tourist who is seduced by a Interpol agent (Jolie) who is trying to track down a criminal who was once her lover. Production is expected to begin in the Spring.
von Donnersmarck previously directed The Lives of Others in 2006. The movie won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
New Alice in Wonderland Trailer
Disney has released the new trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover. Watch the video below.
Alice in Wonderland opens March 5, 2010.
Dark Shadows Up Next For Tim Burton
Way back in June Johnny Depp confirmed that he would be starring in Dark Shadows, a movie based on the popular 1960’s and 70’s soap opera that featured vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts and witches. Depp will be playing the vampire Barnabas Collins, a character he has admitted he admired as a child.
It was also revealed that, not surprisingly, Depp’s right-hand-man Tim Burton would be involved in the project, although it was not confirmed at the time if he would be directing.
In an interview with SciFiWire.com, producer Graham King confirmed that not only would Depp be starring and Burton directing but that the movie will start filming in the fall of 2010. This is what King had to say:
We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice….John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.
Burton is currently putting the finishing touches on Alice In Wonderland, a movie which also stars Johnny Depp. It will hit theatres on March 5, 2010.
So if Depp is filming The Tourist very soon and then working on Dark Shadows, I wonder what effect this will have on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides? It is supposed to be in theatres in 2011 but it seems like Mr. Depp might have a full plate for the next 12 months. Should be interesting to see how this one plays out.
