Disney’s A Christmas Carol, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, opened at the top of the box office this weekend earning an estimated $31 million. That’s a bit of a disappointment considering the movie cost a reported $200 million to produce. Then again, it’s early in the holiday season, so the movie may stick around for a while. Seemed a little early to me to be releasing a Christmas movie anyways. I’m still making my way through leftover Halloween candy. I don’t want to be thinking about Christmas for at least a couple of more weeks.

Dropping to 2nd place was Michael Jackson’s This Is It which earned $14 million in its 2nd weekend of release. The movie has earned $57.8 million to-date — with another $70 million at the international box office.

Opening in 3rd was The Men Who Stare at Goats. The movie, which stars George Clooney and Ewan McGregor, opened with $13.3 million.

Rounding out the top 5 movies were The Fourth Kind which opened with $12.5 million and Paranormal Activity which added another $8.6 million, bringing it’s 7-week total to $97.4 million.

In other new releases, The Box opened in 6th place with $7.8 million while Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire opened in 13th place with $1.8 million — at only 18 theaters. That’s an amazing $100,000 per location. (To put that in perspective, A Christmas Carol earned $8,400 per location.)

Next weekend’s new releases include 2012 starring John Cusack and directed by Roland Emmerich and Pirate Radio written and directed by Richard Curtis. Fantastic Mr. Fox also opens in limited release.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol Review

A Christmas Carol

It’s hard to believe that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol 166 years ago, but here we are in 2009 and Robert Zemeckis has spent $180 million to produce a motion-capture animated film that retells the famous story. The movie opens this weekend on more than 2,000 digital 3D screens and features the voices of Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright Penn. Despite first being published on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol remains one of the most popular, heart-warming holiday tales ever written. I’m sure you don’t need a recap of Scrooge’s encounters with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Read more

Jim Carrey Getting Fat To Play Curly?

Jim Carrey Fat When we last reported on the progress of The Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges movie, Benicio Del Toro and Paul Giamatti were confirmed for the roles of Moe and Larry, Jim Carrey had dropped out of the movie and some guy named Bill Chott was posting on his own website that he had his “foot in the door” to grab the role as Curly. Chott even indicated on the website that Carrey was no longer involved in the movie.

Well, it now appears that Jim Carrey has been walking around Hollywood with a big beard, a pair of thick-rimmed glasses and about an extra 30 pounds on his belly. Although we have no explanation as to why he would have the beard and the glasses, it appears that Carrey is working on adding 50 pounds to his previously skinny frame to play the role of none other than Curly Howard. As you can see in the picture below, Carrey can barely get the button closed on his suit jacket. This picture was just taken within the last two weeks.

When asked about Carrey’s dramatic weight gain, girlfriend Jenny McCarthy proclaimed, “Oh my God! I get to be dating Curly! That is the greatest thing ever.”

I took at look at Carrey’s IMDB.com page and The Three Stooges is no longer listed in his upcoming films, nor is he listed on the website’s Three Stooges page. Yet there he is, fat, with a beard and a pair of glasses.

I suppose when Carrey starts going around the country promoting his upcoming film A Christmas Carol we might get an explanation on what’s going on with the new look. Until then, I will assume that Carrey is back on board for The Stooges.

The movie is scheduled to be in theatres sometime in 2010.

A Christmas Carol Trailer #2

A second trailer for the Robert Zemeckis-directed animated feature, A Christmas Carol, is online. The 3-D motion picture will be based on the classic Charles Dickens tale, which was first published on December 19th, 1843, if you can believe that. Talk about a timeless and classic piece of literature. It has to rank right up there with some of the all-time greats. It certainly is one of my favourite Christmas stories ever. I really can’t wait for this one to come out. This trailer makes it look like an outstanding version of the story.

Amongst the voices we will hear in the movie are Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Michael J. Fox, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn and Cary Elwes.

A Christmas Carol will be in theatres on November 6th.

The Boston Globe was able to catch up with Peter Farrelly last week and were able to confirm some news regarding their upcoming movie about The Three Stooges. It was confirmed that Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry. Benicio Del Toro, himself a huge Stooges fan, will be playing Moe. Despite reports that Jim Carrey will be playing Curly (it is even indicated on his IMDB page), apparently this is not the case. Farrelly has not yet confirmed who will “nyuk-nyuk” and “woo-woo” their way through the part.

The movie is scheduled to be in theatres in 2010 so one would think an annoucement will be made very soon.
