Tom Cruise Making Mission Impossible 4

Paramount announced today that Tom Cruise will return to the big screen as Special Agent Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible IV to be released Memorial Day 2011. In addition to starring, Cruise will produce along with with J.J. Abrams.
“Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey.
Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec will write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams. Next up is choosing a director. Brian De Palma directed the original in 1996. John Woo directed the first sequel in 2000. David Fincher and Joe Carnahan had been attached to direct the third movie, but dropped out for various reasons. Abrams ended up directing the movie which was released in 2006.
There had been doubts whether the movie would ever get made after the public blowout between Cruise and Paramount owner Sumner Redstone. However, the two patched things up a couple of years ago, Cruise made a cameo in Paramount’s Tropic Thunder and things seem to have gone back to normal. Aside from the fact that Cruise hasn’t had a hit movie since the release of MI 3. Although that could change with the release of Knight and Day in which Cruise stars with Cameron Diaz later this year.
Abrams, meanwhile, directed last year’s Star Trek at Paramount which has earned more than $385 million worldwide.
Cloverfield 2 In The Early Stages

MTV was able to track down J.J. Abrams on the red carpet of the National Board of Review late last week and when asked about a sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield, this is what Abrams had to say:
We’re working on something right now with that and again, you know, it’s early stages.
I have also read rumours on the internet about visual effects companies bidding on the movie so it seems to me like this one is moving forward. I wasn’t too crazy about the first Cloverfield movie despite the fact that it might have had some of the best marketing in the history of film. I hope if they do move forward with a sequel that it’s better than the first one.
Star Trek Sequel Gets 2012 Opening Date

ComingSoon.net is reporting that Paramount Pictures has reserved June 29th, 2012 as the opening date for the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. This probably comes as disappointing news to the millions of Trekkies (and Trekkers) around the world who were hoping for a movie in 2011. The 2009 version of Star Trek was released on May 7th.
There is not a lot of news available on the sequel at this point but it is expected that most of the main cast from the movie will return in 2012.
Star Trek 2 Rumours Begin

Even though it’s at least a year away from being filmed and there’s no director and no script, it’s time for the Star Trek 2 rumours to start hitting the ‘net.
The first comes from ComingSoon.net, which claims that an actor is already being targetted to play Khan, should he be the villain in the next movie. That actor is Nestor Carbonell.
Who is Nestor Carbonell you may ask? Well, if you asked me that question 2 hours ago, I wouldn’t have known who the hell you were talking about but I have now learned that the man known to me and millions of other Lost fans around the world as the mysterious and ageless Richard Alpert on the hit tv show is, in fact, Nestor Carbonell.
Carbonell does resemble, in some ways, a young Ricardo Montalban/Khan. Being on Lost, he certainly has a close connection with J.J. Abrams.
For now, we’ll treat this purely as internet craziness but it sure is an interesting idea that makes sense.
Abrams And The Dark Tower
Cinematical.com is reporting that J.J Abrams and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof have purchased the rights to the entire Dark Tower series from author Stephen King for the grand total of $19. Apparently the number 19 is significant throughout the novels.
The Dark Tower novels have been called the next Lord of the Rings by some people. The story focuses on a gunslinger named Roland and his quest towards a mysterious tower. Luckily there is no ring involved or we might have a wee bit of a case of plagiarism here. The series consists of seven books that involve instances of fantasy, science fiction, horror and the wild west. The seven books were written by Stephen King between 1982 and 2004 and have spawned a series of comic book prequels by Marvel Comics.
Work on the first movie will not begin until after Lost concludes in 2010. Abrams is said to be in the running to direct the movie while Lindelof may write the screenplay. That would be quite an honor for Abrams, as King has already turned down a request from Frank Darabont to direct the movie. Darabont had previously worked on two Stephen King novels, The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption.

M:I 4 in 2011

You can add another movie to the growing list of blockbusters that will be hitting the theatres in the summer of 2011 – Mission: Impossible 4. Tom Cruise, JJ Abrams and Paramount studio will be teaming up to bring us another chapter in the life of superagent Ethan Hunt. Is it just me or does a 2011 release date seem just a tad too optimistic? Considering Abrams is already deeply involved in the Star Trek franchise and a handful of television shows. It had better not take away from any of the work he is doing with “Lost” because if that show doesn’t end absolutely perfectly, I may have to go all MI4 on his ass (whatever that means). I’m pretty happy about this one. I liked all three of the other Mission Impossible movies and see no reason why this one can’t live up to the standards set by its predecessors. Let’s just hope that between now and then that Mr. Cruise doesn’t do any couch-jumping.
J.J. Abrams Trailer!
The trailer for that mysterious J.J. Abrams-produced movie, known only at this time as either 1-18-08 or Cloverfield, is now online. The trailer appeared before Transformers this past weekend and wowed movie audiences throughout the world. The only thing we really know at this point is that the movie will be directed by Matt Reeves (who directed some episodes of Felicity and the movie The Pallbearer), it was written by Drew Goddard (who wrote some episodes of Lost, Alias, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) and it stars Blake Lively (from The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 1 and 2), Mike Vogel (also from Sisterhood 1 and Poseidon) and Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls). The movie is about a monster attack on New York City and will be told from the point of view of a small group of people. At this time, the monster is only known as “The Parasite” although it is widely rumoured to be a Godzilla movie. No one really knows. For all we know, New York could be getting attacked by a giant kangaroo. Anyways, you can check out the ultra-cool trailer right HERE.
