Dear John Tops Box Office

After seven strong weeks at the box office, Avatar was ousted from the top spot by Dear John starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The romantic drama, based on the book by Nicholas Sparks, earned a solid $32.4 million.

This is the 2nd time a James Cameron juggernaut was toppled from the top of the box office by a seemingly unlikely competitor. Titanic’s run at the top of the charts was ended in 1998 after 16 weeks by the thoroughly forgettable Lost in Space starring William Hurt and Matt LeBlanc.

Avatar, meanwhile, DID manage a 2nd place finish, adding another $23.6 million — bringing it’s 8-week total to $630 million.

Opening in 3rd was From Paris With Love. The movie, starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, earned a less-than-spectacular $8.1 million.

Rounding out the top five movies were Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson in 4th with $7 million and Tooth Fairy starring Dwayne Johnson in 5th with $6.5 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include the Garry Marshall-directed rom-com Valentine’s Day, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief starring potential future Spider-Man Logan Lerman and The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.

Tatum and Angarano Join Knockout

Channing TatumThe cast of Steven Soberbergh’s Knockout has grown by two with the addition of Channing Tatum and Michael Angarano.

The action-thriller casts mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano as a black ops super soldier who, after being double crossed by someone on her own team, sets out to uncover who set her up. Ewan McGregor and Michael Douglas also star.

Tatum stars next month with Amanda Seyfried in Dear John. Angarano most recently completed work on Ceremony with Uma Thurman.

(On a somewhat unrelated note, you’d think being an “industry leader” in the field of movie news, Variety would know that it’s Steven — not Stephen — Soderbergh. Looks like somebody didn’t check their spelling. Not that I’m one to complain because I’ve made a spelling mistake or two in my life, but I’m just some guy sitting on a computer in his basement. Just saying…)

Dear John Movie Trailer

You know who’s got it good? Nicholas Sparks, that’ s who. I mean, the guy basically writes the same story over and over again, and makes millions each time. Just look at the books he’s written that have made their way to the screen. Message in a Bottle. A Walk to Remember. The Notebook. Nights in Rodanthe. All the same. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl share passionate relationship. Boy and girl are separated by outside forces beyond their control. Boy and girl realize their relationship is fate and that they are meant to be together. Somebody dies.

Today we get the trailer for Dear John based on Sparks’ book of the same name. The movie stars Channing Tatum as a soldier who meets a girl (Amanda Seyfried) while on leave. (Boy meets girl.) They fall in love. (Boy and girl share passionate relationship.) He goes off to fight in the war after 9/11. (Boy and girl are separated by outside forces beyond their control.) I can only guess from there that somebody dies. Or at least that’s what the formula dictates. Maybe somebody who has read the book can correct me. Check out the video below.

Dear John opens in February in time for Valentine’s Day. How romantic.

G.I. Joe 2 News

gijoe Despite all the bad publicity and negative internet buzz the movie has received, it looks like there will be a sequel for G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. The movie has been panned by many critics and was the centre of a huge internet controversy because it was not screened but it still managed to make $56.2 million in Canada and the U.S. and an estimated $100 million worldwide. Not bad for a movie that was declared the worst movie of the year before a single person on the earth had even seen it (I was at a few screenings this year where the crowd laughed and jeered at the trailer – who’s laughing now?).

In an interview with the L.A. Times Paramount studio’s vice chairman Rob Moore confirmed that a sequel is in the works. He says that all the movie’s lead actors are contractually obliged to do another film but director Stephen Sommers is not.

According to the article, the movie cost $175 million to produce and another $150 million to market and distribute. $150 million? Ouch….Seems to me like it’s got a ways to go before it starts making some money for Paramount.

I have yet to see the movie but I hope to get a chance sometime this week and then I’ll give my two cents on it but with that $150 million marketing price tag, I don’t think it’s going to make a difference anyways. Just for the record, I was not bothered at all that I did not get a screening of G.I. Joe. Was I surprised? Maybe a little. But I guess for me, the screenings are more of a privilege, not a right. I appreciate whatever the studios do for us and this website and if they choose not to show a movie before it hits the theatres then so be it. I’ll just pay my $15 to see the movie like everyone else, if I, in fact, even want to see the movie.
