Alice in Wonderland was the top movie at the box office for a 2nd straight weekend earning another $62 million — a 46% drop from last weekend when it opened with $116 million. The movie has now earned $208.6 million.

Opening in 2nd place was Green Zone starring Matt Damon and directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie, produced on a reported budget of $100 million, opened with an estimated $14.5 million.

In 3rd spot was She’s Out of My League starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve. The romantic comedy opened with $9.6 million.

Not quite the same opening as a Twilight movie but Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson, opened in 4th place with $8.3 million. Not bad for a movie that likely would have tanked had it starred anybody else.

Rounding out the top 5 movies was Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie added another $8.1 million bringing its 4-week total to $108 million.

The only other new release to crack the top ten movies was the Fox Searchlight comedy Our Family Wedding starring Forest Whitaker, America Ferrera and Carlos Mencia.

Alice in Wonderland Review

In Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, it is 13 years after the first time a little girl followed a rabbit down a hole and ended up in a magical and mysterious world. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has grown into a young woman and on the day she is being courted by Hamish, in a rather odd ceremony, Alice runs away only to find herself once again following that same rabbit down another hole that leads her to the same wonderful land — a place she now believes she visited only in a dream. She meets the same cast of kooky characters including Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas), Absolem the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). It is there that she discovers that the place she once called Wonderland is not so wonderful anymore. Under the rule of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), Wonderland has turned into a dark and morbid community where both humans and animals alike are treated with disregard by the Queen, her sidekick the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover) and her trusty dragon Jabberwocky. It is up to Alice to restore order to Wonderland and return power to the much more esteemed White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the sister and adversary to the evil Red Queen. Read more

2010 Super Bowl Commercials

I was underwhelmed by this year’s movie-related Super Bowl commercials. Every single one of these spots already has a trailer out there that I’ve seen over and over again. Sure, I’m looking forward to seeing a couple of them, but gimme something I haven’t seen already. There just wasn’t a “Wow!” moment or something I had to download as soon as I could.

On the flip side, the HomeAway ads with Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo from the Vacation movies had me looking online almost immediately to catch up with the Griswolds in the “Hotel Hell Vacation” short film. And the Megan Fox in the bathtub ad had me wanting, well, more Megan Fox in a bathtub. But, the ad wasn’t that effective considering I can’t even tell you what they were advertising.

I’ve included each of the movie spots below and you can keep reading after to check out a few others that are worth watching.

Robin Hood

The Wolfman

Shutter Island

Alice in Wonderland

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Walt Disney Pictures 2010 Preview

With a somewhat forgettable 2009 behind them (only Up ranked in the year’s top 10 earners), 2010 can only look “up” for Disney.

There’s a surefire hit from Pixar (Toy Story 3), a follow-up to a Disney classic (Alice in Wonderland), another Hannah Montana Miley Cyrus movie (The Last Song), a couple of possible summer blockbusters (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), a couple of romantic comedies — both starring Kristen Bell (When in Rome and You Again), the expected inspirational sports movie (Secretariat) another 2D animated movie (Rapunzel) and the highly anticipated Tron: Legacy.

Dark Shadows Up Next For Tim Burton

Tim_Burton Way back in June Johnny Depp confirmed that he would be starring in Dark Shadows, a movie based on the popular 1960’s and 70’s soap opera that featured vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts and witches. Depp will be playing the vampire Barnabas Collins, a character he has admitted he admired as a child.

It was also revealed that, not surprisingly, Depp’s right-hand-man Tim Burton would be involved in the project, although it was not confirmed at the time if he would be directing.

In an interview with SciFiWire.com, producer Graham King confirmed that not only would Depp be starring and Burton directing but that the movie will start filming in the fall of 2010. This is what King had to say:

We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice….John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.

Burton is currently putting the finishing touches on Alice In Wonderland, a movie which also stars Johnny Depp. It will hit theatres on March 5, 2010.

So if Depp is filming The Tourist very soon and then working on Dark Shadows, I wonder what effect this will have on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides? It is supposed to be in theatres in 2011 but it seems like Mr. Depp might have a full plate for the next 12 months. Should be interesting to see how this one plays out.

New Alice in Wonderland Poster

Facebook has the 3rd new poster for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland featuring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. (As opposed to the previous poster where he could just barely be seen sitting in the background.) You might also notice that this is the 2nd poster (of 7 released so far) featuring Depp’s Hatter and also the 2nd to feature credits from the film. Must be something about a guy in a kooky hat that requires credits.
