"The Earth's darkest day will be
Man's finest hour." No, that's not it. "Heaven and Earth are
about to collide." Nope, not that one either. "Earth has a
deadline." That's the one!! That is the tagline for the new
disaster flick, The Core. If that tagline sounds a lot like the ones
from Armageddon and Deep Impact, there is a reason. All three movies
have pretty much the same plot - the Earth is about to be destroyed, and
a brave group of scientists/astronauts/cyber geeks is the sole hope for
mankind's survival.
The Core's plot is quite comparable with these other movies. The Earth's
magnetic field begins to break down when the core of our planet stops
spinning. Natural disasters spring up all over the world. The Earth only
has one year left before it is cooked to a crisp by the sun. However, a
brave group of 6 men and women assemble to drill to the core of our
planet, set off 1000 mega tons of nuclear bombs and kick-start the core
again.
Of course, we are given our cliché of characters and scenarios: the
secretive military agent, the brilliant recluse scientist, the nerd who
can control any gadget, the budding romance between two of our heroes,
the horribly contrived "emotional" scenes, the fact that
Famous Players in London decided to turn the heat in the theatre way up
that I was sweating my butt off as if I was really in the core of the
Earth. Things like this made The Core a bit of a groaner. I also thought
the movie needed some side plots. There is a stretch of the movie where
all that is being focused on is our heroes in the ship as they head to
the centre of the Earth. I think it would have served them well to have
something else going on, maybe for comic relief. I didn't care much for
Hilary Swank either. She seemed too wooden to buy for a big budget
movie...doesn't she know she's supposed to over-act in these types of
movies!!! Have some fun with the role!!
However, The Core did give me enough entertainment to make me feel like
I got my money's worth. It gives you what you'd expect from a
blockbuster -- mainly the cool special effects. I'm sure the DVD will be
filled with making-of featurettes about the scenes of the Golden Gate
bridge collapse and the Space Shuttle crash.
I was anticipating The Core for about the last month, as I usually do
for the year's first major special effects flick. While it falls short
of its predecessors, I still was entertained enough to recommend this
movie.
