It's all about misdirection. This is the most important factor to remember when watching Swordfish. This would also be one of the reasons why I disagree with my esteemed colleague's opinion of
this movie**.
The movie is designed to be a series of questions and mysteries. I believe the audience is never meant to know exactly what is happening or who exactly is Gabriel Shear (John Travolta). I enjoyed the action
sequences (especially one in the first 10 minutes of the movie), that I
found to be very reminiscent of The Matrix. The acting was good
however, I found that the movie could have made more use of the talented Don Cheadle in
his limited role as Agent Roberts.
Swordfish did contain some unnecessary parts, such as the typical action movie chase scene through the busy streets, and a boring
subplot involving Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) and his daughter. I still came away from this movie feeling entertained, despite low expectations going in. It also brings up some important theoretical questions, about whether the lives of a few innocent people is worth the freedom of a whole country. If you are looking to be entertained for a couple hours this summer, I would recommend Swordfish.
