When I was 5 years old, my mom bought me a
stuffed Spider-Man for my birthday. I carried that thing around
everywhere back then and I still own it. When I turned 26 this past
Monday, gifts from my friends included a Spider-Man action figure, a
Spider-Man mug and a Spider-Man deck of cards. In case you don't get the
point, Spider-Man is my hero. So it goes without saying that Spider-Man
may have been my most anticipated movie ever.
Let me start this all off by saying I really liked Spider-Man. It was
engrossing and entertaining. Did it do justice to the character? Most
definitely. If I had a choice between this movie and the Spider-Man
cartoon of the mid-90's, which would I choose? The cartoon. Now this is
no slander against the movie - I just prefer my superheroes in cartoon
form evidently. I think they can just do more with the action sequences
in cartoon form. Look at X-Men, Batman and Superman. Their cartoons are
far superior to their respective movies.
Now to address the main concerns I have heard about Spider-Man:
- Tobey Maguire was fine as
Spider-Man/Peter Parker. However, I would have liked to have seen
them unearth a no-name actor, thereby giving me no pre-conceived
notions about the character.
-
I didn't mind the look of the Green
Goblin. I would probably want a suit of armor too, even if I had super
strength!
-
I didn't even notice the special effects,
so they didn't bother me. Quite frankly, the movie would've sucked
without them. Who wants to see some goof in a costume throwing a rope
around??
-
For the guys out there, Kirsten Dunst is
quite sexy in Spider-Man as Mary Jane Watson
There were a few points of Spider-Man I
was disappointed with. He seemed almost too geeky in high school. (To me
anyways - I don't remember him being that bad!) Also, Spider-Man seemed
to lack the snazzy comebacks with the Goblin that set him apart from all
the other superheroes. I mean, I think I love him most for his ability
to banter well with supervillains. And finally, Macy Gray as the
featured singer in the movie??? I can't stand her!!!
More than anything though, I really liked how Spider-Man ended. A
classic exchange between Peter and Harry Osborn (son of Green Goblin),
setting up future plots. The surprise twist between Peter and Mary Jane
was heartbreaking, but appropriate. And that look in her eye at the end
had sequel plot written all over it.
My main feeling after leaving Spider-Man was one of exhaustion. Whether this
feeling was from waking up so early that morning, or from knowing I had
to head to work for the next eight long hours right after the movie, or from
finally having 20 years of anticipation fulfilled, I am not sure. So
after soaking it all in while at work, my one thought is this - where do
I go from here, after finally seeing the film I had waited so long to
see? I guess I will see it again this weekend. And watch Smallville for
my superhero fix. (Best show on TV!!!) From there, I'll have to wait
another two weeks for my other most-anticipated movie ever.
