A Man Apart |
|
Have you ever been at work or school and
you glance at the clock, only to find out a few minutes have passed when
it seems like it's been forever? That is what A Man Apart felt like for
me. It felt like a 3 hour movie trapped in the body of a 2 hour one.
A Man Apart tells the story of Sean Vetter (Vin Diesel), a DEA officer
who makes the biggest bust of his career by taking down the head of the
Mexican drug cartel. Once the cartel's mysterious new leader emerges,
known only as Diablo, he begins to take out the old leader's alliances.
Diablo also tries to take out Vetter, but ends up killing his wife
instead. Vetter seeks advice from the man he jailed to stop this new
foe, all the while trying not to melt down under the pressure of his
lost love.
I don't know what it was about A Man Apart, but it just dragged along. I
found the plot interesting enough and the relationships between the
characters, like Diesel & Larenz Tate, are somewhat compelling.
Vin's performance was fine as he combined the fury of previous roles
like The Fast and The Furious with a dramatic touch that he's showed
previously in films like Boiler Room. Maybe it was the fact that the
first 30 minutes of the movie were a wash since it was pretty much given
away in all the previews for the movie (Vin takes down the drug lord,
his wife dies).
A Man Apart is more suited for a rental than the theatre. If you're
anything like me, you'll need to stop this movie for a while when it
makes you restless to find something else to do for a few minutes.
