In my mind, what made Silence of the Lambs
so great was not so much the characters, but the fabulous plot. That's
not to say the arresting character of Hannibal Lector wasn't
captivating, for he was, but the creepiness of the crimes along with the
sleuthing was what made it really work. And with this new film, we got
that same old feeling again from those same old ingredients. A grizzly
crime. A psychopath on the lose. A hero trying to stop him.
I can't help but compare this movie to Manhunter, the earlier attempt of
adapting the novel. Both did a great job of relaying the story at a pace
without pause. Both held strong to keeping true to the characters. Both
even spun some plot points differing the book. But what set them apart
was tone. Like Silence, this latest effort kept things dark with a
nervous energy to every scene. In fact, I felt at times they went
overboard with cheap scare moments like a horror flick. Manhunter, on
the other hand, presented it more straight forward as a crime drama
would do rather than a thriller. What works better to me? Check out my
rating.
