Another summer, another Steven Spielberg
blockbuster. Gotta love it! This time, he teams with bona fide star Tom
Cruise to produce what is essentially a terrific sci-fi chase flick.
Now if you're expecting a faithful interpretation of Philip K. Dick's
Twighlight Zone-y short story, be prepared for a disappointment. While
the opening premise remains the same, this movie takes a rather large
departure from Dick's plot concepts, draws to a totally different
conclusion and defeats the meaning behind the title. This however may
have been a good thing, since there were some holes in the original
work.
But here, in this movie, everything is pretty straight forward and
characters were well fleshed out. Set in a finely detailed future,
Cruise is perfect as the man on the run. I don't think anyone else can
better his flat out dashes. With a good dose of action and a strong
mystery plot there were also surprisingly many moments of subtle humor.
A definite nice touch.
But what would this movie be without Spielberg throwing in his
flawlessly integrated special effects? Again, he sells us a uniquely
imaginative world, and we buy it, willingly and absolutely.
While a little disappointed at not getting the mindbender the source
material was, I couldn't complain when I caught glimpses of an Indiana
Jones movie and flashes of The Fugitive. It's hard to find anything bad
about this flick since, from beginning to end, it was wholly
entertaining. As for being the best movie out this year? It's easily so.
