Out Of Time Movie Review

Out of Time is the latest (but definitely not the greatest) Denzel Washington flick. In it, Denzel plays the chief of police of a small county outside of Miami. There, he cheats on his wife (Eva Mendes) with his high school sweetheart (Sanaa Lathan) who is married to a former football player (Dean Cain). Make sense? Sure, there are a couple of twists here and there, but it's all in good fun. Besides, Denzel and his wife are in the process of getting a divorce, so it's not like he's really cheating, is it?

So anyways, when he learns that his mistress is dying of cancer, he steals some drug money from the evidence room to help her get some experimental treatment. However, the mistress turns out to be a lying bitch who didn't have cancer at all who takes off with her husband and the money. Sound familiar to any of you guys out there. How many of you have been ripped off by a girlfriend. I once gave a former girlfriend $500 to help pay her rent and I never really heard from her again. It happens... Of course, I didn't steal the money from the evidence room when I worked for the police (I really did work for the police), so I can't really relate to Denzel on this one.

(If you've read anything about this movie, you pretty much know what happens in this movie, so I hope I'm not going to spoil anything for you.)

So, they steal the money and make it look like they're dead and that Denzel is guilty of their murder. So when his future former wife begins the investigation (conveniently, she's the lead homicide detective on the case) Denzel must work his magic to keep her off his tracks while he frantically tries to solve the case himself and get back the money which is now being requested as evidence by the DEA. Throw in there a few more twists and turns, a little humor, a couple of more twists, a couple of more turns, and a groovin' Miami-ish soundtrack and you have yourself an only-okay movie. Pretty cut and dry.

Denzel is his dependable self here but , I will complain that he wasn't really challenged with this role. We've all seen this Denzel before. As for the rest of the cast, they were all okay. It was nice to see former Superman, Dean Cain, on the big screen too. I almost thought he fell off the planet. Probably the stand out character for me in this movie was the comic relief guy, John Billingsley. He added just enough to the movie to make it funny, but still keep the suspensful tone the movie was trying to maintain. In addition, the setting of the movie is almost a character in itself. The heat, and the aforementioned Miami-ish soundtrack play a lot into the movie.

So, if you're in the mood for a little ole' dependable Denzel, you've come to the right spot. If you're looking for something a little deeper, or a little more challenging, look somewhere else. There's no surprises here. Nothing great, but not a bad way to waste a couple of hours.
