As I walked out of the screening for 'The
Mothman Prophecies', I overheard a fellow patron being interviewed by
the local media and the reporter asked the question that most people who
see the movie are going to be asked - "Was 'The Mothman Prophecies'
scary?" In my personal opinion, it was scary. Then it wasn't scary.
Then it was scary again. Then it wasn't scary again. Then it was sort of
scary. Then it wasn't scary. I think you get the point. To me, it just
was not consistently scary, or at least as consistent as I would have
liked it to have been. Mind you, when you consider that the movie is
based on actual events, well, I would have to say it is pretty damned
scary.
Anyways, enough with the scary talk. My overall opinion of 'The Mothman
Prophecies' is that it is a decent movie. There were parts where I was
mildly disappointed, where the movie seemed to drag just ever so
slightly. And then there were parts where I felt true terror. But then
that terror would just seem to disappear. If the movie would have just
kept the feeling of terror in the audience for longer periods of time,
'The Mothman Prophecies' would have been quite an outstanding movie. A
movie like 'The Blair Witch Project' did this for me.
Instead, it is a movie that turns in decent performances from Richard
Gere and Laura Linney, does a decent job of explaining the unexplainable
events that unraveled in the small West Virginia town of Point Pleasant,
and will do a good job of making moviegoers wonder aloud about the
strange phenomena that has occurred in their own lives. If you are an
X-Files type of person and enjoy the weird and the wonderful, then I
would say this movie is for you. The only difference between this movie
and the X-Files is this is the real thing. There are no Mulder and
Scully around to sort everything out. And the X-Files is now coming to
an end. And the funny thing is, I got a call months ago, and a very
strange voice on the other end told me that the X-Files would be going
off the air. And when I asked the voice about Friends, he just hung
up...
