Reviews - The Recruit |
|
When Colin Farrell was in Toronto filming
he was known to frequent bars that starred many naked women. He was
known to have more than a few beers, a lot of cigarettes and apparently
he was banging Jennifer Love Hewitt, who was also in town shooting The
Tuxedo. Whether this is true or not, who really gives a shit. I sure
hope for his sake that he was balling Jennifer. After recently spending
an entire two weeks in Dublin, Ireland, I can almost understand where
Colin is coming from, with his smoking, drinking and swearing. It really
is the norm in Ireland. I mean everyone there smokes - you can almost
get lung cancer just standing on a street corner for ten minutes.
Everyone drinks - we all know that. And everyone swears. But nobody in
Ireland has had the pleasure of balling Jennifer Love Hewitt. So way to
go Colin.
Nevertheless, let me get to Farrell's latest project, The Recruit.
Although Al Pacino gets top billing in this one, make no mistake, Colin
Farrell is the star of this movie. Pacino is almost insignificant. Okay,
he is somewhat important I suppose but I just found him doing his now
famous "hoo-haa" character and when he gets in his yelling
speeches and short sentences, I really found myself getting lost with
some of his dialogue. I like Pacino and he was decent in the movie. He
had some really good one-liners and a couple of funny moments but
anytime his dialogue required more than five sentences, I didn't know
what the hell he was talking about anymore. He just seems to ramble on
and on and on...
Farrell, on the other hand, is quite good in The Recruit. Just trying to
figure out how the hell he hides that thick Irish accent for the entire
two hour movie is almost worth the price of admission. Farrell is
playing James Clayton, a computer whiz with a constant 5 o'clock shadow,
who currently working as a bartender. Clayton gets recruited by CIA
agent Will Burke (Pacino) and we soon find Clayton in a CIA training
centre. The intensive training that follows is interesting and
entertaining. At many points we are left wondering whether what we are
witnessing is training or real-life CIA moments and it is that guessing
and suspense that makes The Recruit fairly compelling. In fact, even
when Farrell gets booted out of the CIA training facility and is
assigned to follow a hot piece of ass named Layla (Brigitte Monyahan),
we are still left wondering what is real and what is training. And I
won't ruin whether James balls Layla. That will be a surprise.
Because The Recruit does have suspense, a very cool Colin Farrell, a
very hot chick who teases us with a bit of nudity and a few good Pacino
one-liners, it is not a total waste of time. In fact, it is probably a
decent way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. However, with that being
said, the ending is fairly anti-climatic. It should have been better.
You could see it coming a mile away and you hope that is not what is
going to happen, but what you don't want to happen what actually does
happen. Does that make sense? Probably not, but see the movie and you
will know what I mean. Anyways, I just scratched my ass and got a whiff
of my hand and I now have to go to either wash my hand or chop it off
and throw it in the garbage, so I will wrap up by saying The Recruit is
a decent movie. Don't go in expecting the next great CIA/spy movie. Just
go enjoy a really good up-and-coming actor in Colin Farrell and some of
the old Pacino we have come to love and you won't be disappointed.
