Reviews - Bend It Like Beckham |
|
Bend It Like Beckham is the story of an
Indian girl Jess (Parminder Nagra), living in London, who is so much in
love with soccer superstar David Beckham that you assume that she would
like to bend it with Beckham. Instead, she plays soccer like Beckham and
it is not long before her talent is discovered and she is recruited on a
local women's soccer team. The predictable occurs - she befriends a
teammate (Keira Knightley), everyone assumes they are lesbians, they
both fall in love with the same man and so on and so forth. But Jess is
faced with a dilemma that not all English footballers must face - she
comes from a strict Indian background and her traditional parents forbid
her from having anything to do with the sport.
Chances are if you liked 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', you will enjoy Bend
It Like Beckham. They are similar in many ways, dealing with life in a
culture with which many of us are not familiar. Bend It takes us inside
the life of a traditional Indian family and adds some clean humor that
makes this movie enjoyable. The Indian wedding that is sort of a subplot
of the movie looks like it would be a grand old time. Bend It is a funny
movie - but not hilarious. It has romance, but it is not an overwhelming
part of the movie. There is some sport, of course, but there are no
long, boring sequences - just some fast-paced and fairly short action.
Bend It Like Beckham is a good English movie. It is not as good as
another English movie I recently had a chance to enjoy - Billy Elliott.
But is still a decent movie. The acting is quite good - the girls, the
parents, the coach, the sister - all are enjoyable and likeable
characters. The story is realistic, the comedy will give you a few
chuckles. And there is even a brief appearance by the man himself, David
Beckham. I can tell you this film must have been completed quite some
time ago. Beckham had a shaved head in movie and the guy has had about
ten different hairstyles since then. He's gotta have the greatest hair
of anyone in the world. And no, I am not gay, just observant.
Nevertheless, I will recommend Bend It Like Beckham. It is a simple
movie, not overwhelming. It will not go down as one of the greats of all
time but is an enjoyable movie nonetheless.
