Solo (Giovanni Ribisi), a once-successful young novelist, finds himself at the end of a particular road. He has squandered everything he had (and could borrow) on women, drugs and expensive therapy, all in an effort to find creative inspiration and some modicum of personal happiness. When he is no longer able to afford therapy, his psychiatrist, Dr. Nourmand (Don Cheadle), suggests he get a pet.

That the aptly named Solo is not what is known as a "dog person" is quite evident; however, despite some initial misgivings, he finds himself growing attached to the pooch he has purchased and he resists the temptation just to get rid of this wrinkle in his life. Soon Solo encounters Lola (Lynn Collins), a spunky, self-aware stripper. Her hundred-pound loaner dog has taken a chunk out of his pint-sized puppy - and he needs to borrow money from her to pay the vet. Solo's overtures of friendship towards Lola tiptoe towards romance but, as luck would have it, canine-induced complications get in the way.
