We Don't Live Here Anymore is the story of two average ordinary married couples who live in Anywhere, USA and deal with the day to day issues any couple may (or may not) encounter at some point in their lives. Work. Family. Friends. What makes these couples different, however, is that the husband in one couple is having an affair with the wife from the other couple. The movie stars a Grade-A class of talent, including Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Watts as the cheating spouses and Laura Dern and Peter Krause as the suckers in their respective relationships.
There were parts of this movie that I enjoyed, and other parts of the movie that really didn't click for me. What did I like? For starters, the story was well told. I enjoyed how the movie started out introducing us to these couples and their problems. I liked that these were real people in real situations. And most of all, I liked the acting. These were some great talents who delivered some great performances. (Except for Laura Dern who I've never taken seriously as an actress.) What didn't click? Well, although I liked the story and the situations, frankly, I didn't buy it. I kept trying to imagine myself in the same situation and I couldn't. The guy cheats on his wife pretty much because she's a lazy slob. Some people might call my wife a lazy slob, but it wouldn't cause me to cheat on her. (On the other hand, we don't have any female friends that resemble Naomi Watts, so I guess I wouldn't really know!) I also didn't particularly buy into the ending of the movie. I can't really put my finger on it, but it just didn't sit well with me. It doesn't really say whether these people were right or wrong. It was all just so morally amibiguous.
For DVD extras, all you're going to find are some trailers for this and a couple of other Warner Independent productions. Really, this DVD could've fared a lot better for me with some bonus features looking behind-the-scenes - like a look at the stories the movie is based on or a director's commentary. Something - please.
Did I like it? Did I not like it? I don't really know what I'm trying to say here. And maybe that was my whole problem with the movie. I didn't really know what it was trying to say. It's just a story about a time in these couples' lives where they cheat on one another. And then it ends. What's the point? What is the movie trying to say? Maybe I should just go ahead and cheat on my wife. Maybe then I would understand. Then again, anyone who knows me would know that this is something I would never do.
