The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
7.5/10 3/10 Brendan

War of the Worlds stars Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier, a happy-go-lucky divorced father of two who is looking after his teenage son (Justin Chatwin) and his young daughter (Dakota Fanning) for a weekend of fun and relaxation. Unfortunately, things don't go quite as planned when the world is attacked by ruthless aliens who destroy everything in sight. Ray grabs his kids and they try to flee the aliens path of destruction but there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide from these monsters. As Tim Robbins' kooky character says, "this is not a war anymore than there's a war between men and maggots. This is an extermination." This movie is director Steven Spielberg's telling of the classic H.G. Wells science-fiction novel. The movie is intense and includes some of the most spectacular special effects to ever hit the big screen.

The DVD for War of the Worlds is very sparse in bonus features, at least the copy I was given is. In fact, there is only one bonus feature, a featurette called "Designing the Enemy - Tripods and Aliens". Here, we basically see how production staff came up with their version of the tripods and the aliens and their movements and characteristics. There are interviews and comments from various key personnel and brief comments from Spielberg and Cruise.

Overall, I found War of the Worlds to be a good movie with a few convenient and inexplicable moments (the functional camcorder, the path for the car to drive) and a bit of a disappointing ending but still, a movie worth checking out. I'm a bit surprised at the lack of special features on the DVD but I guess that just means that somewhere down the road we will see some sort of two-disc, special edition, limited box set of some sort. (Well, apparently I just learned it's out there already so there you go. Hopefully, the special features are better than what this disc had to offer.)
