Walk the Line stars Joaquin Phoenix as the man in black, Johnny Cash. The movie follows Cash from his humble beginnings as a door-to-door salesman to his early beginnings touring with the likes of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis to his struggles with drug abuse and his eventual redemption. At the heart of the movie is a love story between Cash and June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). She was the love of his life and this movie follows their early beginnings and her helping him overcome his addictions. You might even argue that Cash's fame would've died out a long time ago had it not been for June Carter - at least according to this movie.
I really enjoyed this movie. Phoenix was excellent in the role of Johnny Cash. Sure, I never met Johnny Cash but I imagine if I ever had, this would've been what he'd be like. And yeah, the "country" Johnny Cash I grew up with was a lot different from the "rock'n'roll" Cash portrayed here, but the movie did an excellent job in chronicling the life of Cash as an American icon. And Reese Witherspoon. I've made no secret of my undying love for Reese. I've loved her since forever and that she's finally getting the accolades for this performance is only confirmation of what I've always known.
Special features on the single-disc DVD I received include a feature commentary by co-writer/director James Mangold, 10 deleted scenes (with optional commentary) and the film's theatrical trailer. I personally wish I had received the double-disc edition which includes more features, but I just wasn't that lucky. For fans of the movie I'm imagining that'd be the edition for you to check out.
If I had any complaint about this movie it'd be the comparisons to Ray. The movie pretty much follows the exact same structure -- early beginnings, brother dies, musical success, drug addictions and redemption. Both are good movies, but I can't help but feel that Walk the Line should've done a little more to distinguish itself. One comparison that the movie does deserve is the strength of the lead cast. Just as Jamie Foxx stood out as Ray Charles, this movie is worth seeing for the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon alone. Simply said, they've earned every ounce of recognition they've received.
