In Valiant, Ewan McGregor voices a pigeon during WWII who dreams of joining the Royal Homing Pigeon Service, responsible for delivering messages for the allies that will help them win the war. The problem? Valiant is a misfit. He's a bit small for the forces, which makes him a target for ridicule. However, Valiant's small stature is made up for by the size of his heart - and the fact that he's plucky enough to do whatever his little heart desires if he sets his mind to it. So, with the help of a group of other misfit pigeons, Valiant outwits some evil falcons and manages to come through and help the allied forces in their hour of need. It's your basic story of the underdog (or underpigeon) coming through in a crunch.
It's always hard to knock a kids movie because, after all it's made for kids and not me, but I wasn't really a huge fan of this movie. First, I found I really didn't like Ewan McGregor's voice work here. He was just a little to gung-ho about it and it really turned me off. It just didn't match the character for me. And the story? Too predictable. It's your basic story you've seen a thousand times before - except this time with pigeons. The animation was okay, but it wasn't anything groundbreaking. And finally, I found the whole thing to be a bit sexist against the female characters, and for a movie aimed at impressionable young kids, that just isn't cool.
Bonus features on this DVD include about a minute's worth of "bloopers" and a "Valiant Training Challenge" set-top game where you make your way through three different challenges and collect medals along the way to help the allied forces change the tide of the war.
I suppose there are some children out there who would enjoy a movie like this. Again, it's hard to criticize the movie because it isn't made for guys like me. The fun is innocent enough, and I could imagine kids getting a kick out of some of the gags here, but by the same token, there are a lot better movies out there. It's not a total waste of time, but there are better ways to spend an hour or so.
