Two For The Money stars Matthew McConaughey as Brandon Lang, a former college-level starting quarterback, who knows pretty much everything there is to know about football. When his career is cut short by an unfortunate injury, he's left to find out what his life is all about. When he takes a job providing football gambling picks, he finds he has a knack for making all the right moves. Soon he's recruited by Walter Abrams (Al Pacino), the owner of a successful sports gambling firm. Walter gives Brandon the tools necessary to become successful and to become the best at what he does. But, when Brandon's luck begins to change, his and Walter's lives soon begin to spiral out of control.
I wasn't the biggest fan of this movie. The story was a mess and the acting wasn't much better. Can't Pacino pick better roles for himself? The whole sports gambling thing was interesting, but I found that the movie didn't deliver a strong story around it. And the story with Pacino being a gambling junkie and thinking McConaughey was sleeping with his wife (Rene Russo)? That's just not where I wanted this movie to go.
Bonus features on this DVD include a feature commentary with director DJ Caruso and writer Dan Gilroy, a making-of featurette, an interview with Brandon Link on whom the story is based, some deleted scenes (with optional commentary) and some trailers and TV spots. The highlight here would have to be the Link interview. This guy comes across as 10x more compelling than anything the movie had to offer.
As bad a taste as this movie left in my mouth, my biggest problem would have to be the title. What was it suppose to mean anyways? Did the filmmakers just come up with some random gambling term and stick it on the movie? Couldn't it have been a bit more creative? Or maybe it was because they had two guys - McConaughey and Pacino - who clearly did this movie for one reason only - the money. Two for the Money. That sounds just about right.
