This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a scathing and often hilarious look at the Motion Picture Association of America film ratings board. You know these guys -- they're those fine folks who help you make informed decisions about your movie-going experience by rating movies either G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17.
Anyways, this particular documentary from director Kirby Dick gives viewers a little history about movie ratings, a look inside the MPAA ratings board in addition to questioning some of the decisions the board has made over the last several years. What Kirby Dick does is hire a private investigator to sit outside the offices of the MPAA and find out who the people on this board actually are -- because for some strange reason their identities are kept secret from pretty much everyone. So, while this private investigator is spying on the MPAA, we get interviews with several big name Hollywood directors about some MPAA horror stories. Some of those directors include Kimberley Pierce ("Boys Don't Cry"), Matt Stone ("South Park"), Kevin Smith ("Clerks") and John Waters ("A Dirty Shame") and Wayne Kramer ("The Cooler"). We also get archival footage of MPAA head honcho Jack Valenti and some other MPAA hypocrites.
I'll start out by saying that this movie is very interesting. It gives a good (although not exactly balanced) look at the MPAA, an organization which I've often scratched my head over in the past. (Their preoccupation with sex and willingness to overlook violence is my biggest gripe.) We also get several insightful interviews with a number of big name filmmakers where they pretty much laugh off the MPAA -- and rightfully so. However, where I found the movie failed was that it didn't do much to solve the issue. If the whole purpose of the movie is to slam the MPAA, then job well done. But I would've liked it a whole lot more if it had offered a solution instead of just criticism. Yeah, the MPAA is a joke. You know that. I know that. But what's the alternative?
Special features on this DVD include an audio commentary with Kirby Dick, a Q&A with the director from the SXSW Film Festival and 5 deleted scenes.
If you need further evidence that the MPAA is off their rocker, check this movie out. It's got fun interviews and it offers some of the raunchier scenes to play in theaters over the last several years in a convenient 98-minute package. But if you're looking beyond that, consider "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" as "This Problem Is Not Yet Solved".
