The Polar Express is the screen adaptation of the children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. In the movie, a boy who's not quite sure he believes in the miracle of Christmas any more wakes Christmas Eve to find a train called The Polar Express waiting outside his front door. The boy gets the opportunity to get on the train and take a trip to the North Pole to see Santa before he leaves to deliver presents for Christmas morning. He's a little reluctant, but he gets on the train and finds himself in a series of adventures before finally reaching his destination. Once there, he rediscovers his belief in Santa and gets a very special treat from the man in the big red suit.
Special features on this 2-disc DVD set begin with "You Look Familiar" which highlights the performance capture used in the film and focusing on the several roles played by Tom Hanks and a five-part documentary titled "A Genuine Ticket to Ride" which looks at the making of the movie. From there, we get "True Inspirations: An Author's Adventure" which looks at the work of Chris Van Allsburg, "Josh Groban at the Greek" which is a live performance of a song "Believe" from the film, a behind the scenes feature on making of "Believe", a "Polar Express Challenge" set top game, "Meet the Snow Angels" where the filmmakers talk about their favorite Christmas gifts and memories, a video game preview and a deleted musical scene from the film featuring the characters played by actor Michael Jeter who passed away during the production of the film.. For Easter Egg fans, there are also five hidden features included, each of which is a multi-angle sequence from the film showing behind-the-scenes footage along with the corresponding finished scenes.
This was a beautiful movie from every aspect. It looked great, it was well acted and it's really a timeless tale that will no doubt be passed from one generation to the next. There were parts of the movie I felt were a little too scary for very young children and I'm not quite sure I'd let my children watch it just yet, but given a few more years, I'm sure they too will be able to appreciate the magic and beauty of The Polar Express.
