Joel Schumacher is terrible. He makes some terribly good movies. And he makes some terribly bad movies. Unfortunately for Mr. Schumacher, he's mostly remembered for the terribly bad ones. I'm not really sure where The Phantom of the Opera fits in there. I'm sure it was well-intentioned, however, I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy it. While it looked good and featured a nice cast (including an Oscar nominated performance by Emmy Rossum) I couldn't keep myself awake for more than a half-hour at a time - and I wasn't even tired. Put together, the half-hour blocks I watched couldn't save this movie - and I blame Schumacher. It's one of the most successful stage productions of all-time. Was it really that hard to adapt it into a major motion picture? Maybe if I had seen the stage production of the movie, I might have appreciated this attempt by Schumacher, but I highly doubt it.
Special features on this 2-Disc Special Widescreen Edition include an hour-long feature titled "Behind the Mask: The Story of 'The Phantom of the Opera'" which looks at the history of The Phantom and it's evolution as a stage production, "The Making of 'The Phantom of the Opera'" which is an incredibly in-depth, 45 minutes look at the making of the motion picture and finally, an additional musical scene titled "No One Would Listen". I will say that I enjoyed the features - especially the documentaries - a lot more than the actual movie. At least I stayed awake for them.
For those who like Easter Eggs, look for the cast sing-along where members of the cast sing lines from the famous "Phantom" song. I hate to say it, but this was the best part of the DVD.
I'll give credit in that the movie looked good. But in the end, it just didn't capture my imagination enough to make me enjoy it at all. So, if you're a fan of the stage production, or if you're trying to impress your girlfriend, you might be able to sit through this. Otherwise, steer clear.
