Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas) is a CIA agent whose son Mark (Ryan Reynolds, aka Van Wilder) is getting married to the daughter of a rather anal foot doctor (Albert Brooks). When the parents meet, Mr. Tobias is introduced as a copier salesman but it is not long before Dr. Peyser discovers that the slick-talking father of the groom is none other than a rogue agent. The good doctor soon finds himself on the FBI's most wanted list, the apple of the eye of an effeminate French arms dealer (David Suchet) and now must not only help Steve Tobias save the world but must make sure their children get married.

The In-Laws is a decent movie. It is filled with some genuine laughs and the two lead characters (Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks) have enough chemistry and generate enough laughs to keep you somewhat interested in the movie. Seeing Albert Brooks in a sauna with a thong is disturbing - but funny. There are several scenes like that (okay, there is only one scene like that) but there are several scenes that elicit genuine laughs but there is not a whole lot that will end up being tattooed on your brain or talking about over a beer. What I am saying is that the movie is okay (the script is a bit too simple and in parts, really not plausible) but you will probably forget the movie soon after you see it, especially if you have had a few beers. Hell, I saw the movie just over a week ago and am having trouble writing this review. But I do remember Albert Brooks in a thong. What does that say about me?!?!

On a little side note, The In-Laws was filmed in Toronto and I had the pleasure of watching one scene in the movie being shot. If you look really closely you might even see me standing on the sidewalk. I'm the guy who is not in the thong. It is the scene where Michael Douglas is pretending he is a street bum. It took them three days to shoot that scene. Three days. In the movie, the entire scene lasted maybe thirty seconds. Three days for a thirty second clip! No wonder these movies take millions of dollars to make. But hell, what do I know. I am just a wise-ass movie reviewer in a thong who thinks he knows everything but barely knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

Anyways, if you want some cheap laughs and Bruce Almighty is sold out this weekend, go see The In-Laws. It is a decent movie, but it's not going to rewrite the Hollywood history book. I liked Douglas and Albert Brooks. The story was okay, not great. There are a few genuinely funny scenes. But there is nothing here to write home about. It might be all the better just to wait for this one on video.
