The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
7.5/10 6/10 Liam

The Ice Harvest stars John Cusack as Charlie, a mob lawyer who decides on Christmas Eve rip off the mobster he works for. Teamed with his partner Vic (Billy Bob Thornton) they manage to pull off the perfect crime and net themselves a cool $2 million and change. However, the perfect crime turns out to be not so perfect when problems arise with their getaway. Namely, there's a ice storm and getting outta town isn't going to be easy. So, what started out as the perfect crime soon turns into one twist after another involving drunks, strippers and the mob. In the end, as Wichita falls, so falls Wichita Falls. (Sorry - that's a quote from the movie I was just dying to work in to this review!)

I really liked this movie despite the fact that it really wasn't the movie I was expecting it to be. From the previews I was thinking the movie would be more along the lines of a not-so-dark comedy. However, it all turned out to be quite dark - and not all that comedic. Sure, there was a chuckle here or there but I wouldn't go as far as to call this a laffer.

Bonus features on this DVD include a feature commentary with director Harold Ramis, two alternate endings (which only enforce how dark the movie is), a funny outtake with Billy Bob performing a scene from the movie using his "Slingblade" voice, a "Cracking the Story" featurette where we hear about the story from the author of the book that the movie is based on as well as the film's screenwriters, a making-of feature titled "Beneath the Harvest" and finally an Analysis of a Scene feature looking at the "Ice Cracking" scene from the movie.

Despite the movie not being exactly what I was expecting, I have to give this movie a recommendation. The cast (particularly Cusack) are at the top of their game and the story itself is very well done. It's not exactly a movie you'd watch on a warmer summer night, but if you're like me, and you're freezing your ass off this winter, check this movie out.
