There was great concern amongst the fans of The Fast and the Furious that a sequel without Vin Diesel would be a collosal flop. Personally, I was in the group of people who simply banged their head against a wall when they heard there was going to be a sequel. In fact, when I first heard the news, I lay awake in bed for days, thinking of the sheer horror of having to watch another Fast and Furious movie. Well folks, after seeing 2 Fast 2 Furious, I have two things to say. One, Vin Who? And two, 2 Fast 2 Furious kicks some major league ass. Hell, even the title is cool.
Paul Walker is back as Brian O'Connor, a former cop and present-day professional street car racer. This time Brian must go undercover with customs agent Monica Clemente (Eva Mendes) and has recruited his childhood friend and ex-con Roman Pearce (Tyrese) to help them take down a high-rolling criminal by the name of Carter Verone (Cole Hauser).
The movie has a bit of everything - fast cars, dirty cops, chicks in bikinis, kick-ass one-liners, some awesome camera work, muscular dudes for the women and homosexuals, more chicks in bikinis, a really creepy torture scene, very loud music and lots and lots of more fun. I have to say, the one thing that bothers me about a movie like this is its glorification of illegal drag-racing, theft and criminals. I mean, it really makes all this shit look cool. No wonder the world is going to hell in a hand basket, but hey, I still had fun watching it. That's pretty much all this movie is - pure fun. The story has more holes in it that a slice of Swiss cheese, but it was still one hell of a ride.
Tyrese was great as Vin Diesel's replacement. He stole every scene he was in. Hell, he pretty much stole the whole movie. I'd have to say that this movie was well on its way onto my shitlist until Tyrese appeared on the screen. The rest of the cast was quite good as well, even the most minor characters, whether it be the cops, the bodyguards, the mechanics or the drag racers. I have actually had a chance to see Paul Walker on one occassion away from the cameras and the media and he really is just like one of the guys, joking around with his pals and laughing and farting and stuff like that. Okay, he didn't fart but he seemed like the type of guy that would. He was a cool guy and it is strange seeing him on the screen all serious and acting like a real man after how I saw him.
Before running out to see 2 Fast 2 Furious, let me warn you that although I may be gushing over the movie, it is not the type of movie that is going to change anyone's life or result in some great revelation, unless you really, really like cars. It is simply a rollercoaster ride of a movie that you may see once and like and if you are under the age of 15, will probably see twice. Even if you didn't like the first movie, I would still recommend giving the sequel a chance because I know I didn't think the original movie was anything special. Just don't take it 2 seriously and don't expect 2 much and you should have fun. Man, was I dying to use the 2 in this review!
