The Chumscrubber
(DreamWorks Home Entertainment)

The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
5.5/10 4/10 Liam

The Chumscrubber is a difficult movie to summarize. There's Dean (Jamie Bell) who discovers the body of his best friend who has just committed suicide. Dean's friend was a drug dealer and some kids at school kidnap Dean's little brother so that Dean will bring them his friend's stash of hidden drugs - however they've mistakenly kidnapped the wrong kid. Then, there's the parents in the little community who are pretty much oblivious to everything that's going on around them. The movie features an all-star cast including Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, Rita Wilson and Justin Chatwin.

When I saw the preview I was really interested in seeing this movie. Now, after seeing it, I don't really know how to recommend it. I was thinking it'd be somewhere along the lines of Donnie Darko - but unfortunately it wasn't. It was well acted and it was an original story, but the execution just wasn't there.

Special features on this DVD include a commentary with director Arie Posin and writer Zac Stanford, a making-of featurette, some deleted/extended scenes and a couple of previews for other titles from DreamWorks Home Entertainment.

The Chumscrubber wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped it would be. There's a message about society and people's dependence on drugs - either illegal or prescribed - but I don't know that the movie conveyed that message as well as it could have. For me, the movie was a near miss.
