The Brothers Grimm stars Matt Damon as Will Grimm and Heath Ledger as Jake Grimm. Will and Jake are con-artists. They travel from village to village to perform choreographed exorcisms to rid the villagers of the witches, demons and whatnot that haunt their lives. A French army commander realizes the boys are a fraud and forces them to go to one of the German villages he oversees to convince its people they have rid their forest of the evil spirits that threaten them. Unfortunately, Jake and Will realize that this time they are not dealing with a hoax. Ten young girls have disappeared in the forest and it is up to the brothers Grimm and their sexy guide Angelika (Lena Headey) to genuinely save the village from the evil that lurks nearby.

The Brothers Grimm is directed by the much-adored Terry Gilliam, a man whose resume includes some of the quirkiest, most stylish and genuinely humourous movies of recent times. Fans of Mr. Gilliam should not be disappointed by The Brothers Grimm. It is stylish, it is humourous at times (although probably not as funny as it wants to be) and it has some great set designs.

I have to admit, I didn't love this movie. I mean, the movie just sort of starts and jumps into everything and it takes a while to figure out what exactly the hell is going on. Sometimes the dialogue is a bit difficult to understand. We probably don't get to know the characters, particularly the Grimm boys, as well as we should. And it really takes a good half hour to 45 minutes before the movie really gets going.

But with that being said, the second half of the movie is quite entertaining. The references to many of the world's famous fairy tales are quite interesting (just off the top of my head, I got Jack and the Beanstock, Little Red Riding Hood, Hanzel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumplestiltskin and Cinderella but I'm sure there are many more). The movie certainly has Terry Gilliam's fingerprints all over it but I wouldn't call it his finest work.

Overall, The Brothers Grimm is a decent flick. As I said, not Gilliam at his finest. Not the best movie I have seen this month, let alone this summer. But still, a mildly humourous, mildly entertaining flick that is sure to please Gilliam's loyal fans and any movie fans who decide to check it out somewhere down the road.
