The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
4/10 5/10 Liam

I have very little faith in Jimmy Fallon as an actor. It probably has something to do with the fact that he has a Saturday Night Live background. Don't get me wrong - there have been some great comedians to come out of SNL, but he just doesn't strike me as one of them. He's more David Spade/Rob Schneider than Steve Martin/Eddie Murphy/Adam Sandler. Actually, that may be a bit of an insult to David Spade and Rob Schneider.

In Taxi, Fallon stars as a policeman who can't drive worth shit - which is why he's forbidden to drive by his superior officer (and former girlfriend) played by Jennifer Esposito. So, when he's the nearest officer to a scene of a bank robbery he sets off on pursuit. Naturally, without being able to drive, he does what any person in their right mind would do - he hails a taxi. He soon discovers that this is no ordinary taxi. Instead, it's a super-taxi, souped up by its owner, played by Queen Latifah. Anyways, when the bad guys (or girls in this situation) get away, Fallon and Latifah reluctantly team up to bring them down.

This DVD offers the theatrical version of the film as well as an extended version. I can't really say what the difference was between the two (since I was unwilling to watch the movie a second time) but if it makes any difference, I watched the extended version.

Extras here include four deleted scenes, a couple of trailers as well as five featurettes including "The Meter's Running: Making Taxi" (a behind-the-scenes featurette), "Lights, Camera, Blue Screen" (looking at visual effects), "Tour Guide: Jimmy Fallon" (a tour of the set with Jimmy Fallon trying really hard to be funny), "Reel Comedy: Taxi" (from Comedy Central) and finally "Beautiful Criminals" (featuring gratuitous footage of supermodel Gisele Bundchen). For those interested, the theatrical version of the movie also offers an audio commentary by director Tim Story.

I can imagine some people liking this movie - but I wasn't one of them. It wasn't just Fallon. It was a combination of him, Latifah and a generally weak story that I kept thinking could have been better - a lot better. Don't hail this Taxi.
