Superman Returns is the Man of Steel's long-in-development return to the big screen. With Brandon Routh starring as our titular hero, the story picks up after the events of the previous movies starring Christopher Reeve. After a 5-year absence in which he returned to the former site in the universe occupied by the planet Krypton, Superman returns to an Earth that has learned to live without him. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) is married and has a son and Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has gotten out of prison and is hatching another nefarious plan involving real estate. So, Superman comes back and soon, he's back to his saving-the-day ways. However, it's not long before he must cross paths with Luthor again.
Superman Returns was one of the biggest summer box office disappointments in recent memory. Sure, the movie crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box office -- but just barely. And for a movie that cost a reported $270 million to make, that isn't good news. I, for one, really enjoyed this movie. Yeah, you've got those who complain that the movie was all talk and no action, but so was the original Christopher Reeve Superman. As a matter of fact, Superman didn't even show up in that movie until near the 45 minutes mark! It just goes to prove that no matter what, people just aren't going to be happy. People constantly complain that movies aren't as good as they used to be -- that they are all action and no plot. Here, we get a movie that is more plot and less action, and people still complain. I just don't get it.
Special features on this two-disc special edtion DVD include a 5-part making-of documentary titled "Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns", an interesting "Resurrecting Jor-El" feature showing how that brought Marlon Brando back as Superman's Krypton father, 11 deleted scenes, and some of previews for an assortment of Superman titles. Unfortunately, we don't get an audio commentary from director Bryan Singer nor does he introduce any of the deleted scenes or talk about why they didn't make the final cut. What a shame.
I stand by my original review of "Superman Returns". It's a good movie that lays the groundwork for future Superman movies. Let's just hope that audiences are a little more forgiving next time around.
