Stay stars Ewan McGregor as a psychologist, Naomi Watts as his girlfriend and Ryan Gosling as his suicidal patient. Although the packaging of this movie describes it as a "thriller" I don't know if I'd go that far. A psychological drama? Maybe. A psychological thriller. Not so much.
The movie follows McGregor's character as he tries to help his suicidal patient and prevent him from killing himself on his upcoming 21st birthday. Along the way, he gets lost in a fucked up world where he has absolutely no idea what's going on. I liken myself a lot to this character in that I had absolutely no idea what was going on either - at least up until the final minutes of the film which pretty much answered all of my lingering questions but at the same time left me wondering what the purpose of the movie was. Being that the end of the movie is supposed to be some sort of surprise I won't reveal anything else here.
Special features here begin with two scene specific commentaries - the first with director Marc Forster and actor Ryan Gosling looking at the acting in the movie and the second with Forster, editor Matt Chesse, visual effects designer Kevin Tod Haug and director of photography Roberto Schaefer which looks mostly behind-the-scenes. More features include a "Departing Visions" featurette which looks at real-life people who've experienced similar situations to the one depicted in the movie, a featurette on the music used in the movie and the film's theatrical trailer.
Stay wasn't such a bad movie. It was a little frustrating to watch, but it was one of those movies that, when it was over, I wanted to watch again to see what I had missed. In terms of the extras provided here, the best would have to be the commentaries which, again, filled in a few of the blanks that I had missed. If you're the type of person who enjoys a little psycho babble, you might enjoy this one. Otherwise, if you really don't want to think too much, just steer clear.
