The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
4/10 5/10 Liam

I'm going to come right out and say that I did not enjoy this movie. I wanted to. The preview hooked me with it's catchy song and attractive cast but when it came right down to it, the movie just didn't do it for me. Even my girlfriend (who considers herself a fan of the stage production) just tuned out after about 20 minutes. That's not a good sign.

The movie follows a year in the lives of a group of friends in New York's East Village. They are a group of artists who are living in a run down apartment complex who can't pay the rent and who struggle with day-to-day living without jobs or money. All they have are each other. And to top it off, a few in the group are living with AIDS, so you pretty much know from the outset that one or more of the cast isn't going to make it to the end of the movie. So, we follow these characters over the course of the movie and get a look at their lives and the trials and tribulations they face. Yeah, you get a little insight but by the end of the movie all I could say was "Meh". It just wasn't all that special.

If you're still interested, the DVD does offer some special features. They include a commentary with director Chris Columbus and select members of the ensemble cast, some deleted scenes and musical performances, a 6-part "No Day But Today" documentary primarily focusing on Rent creator Jonathan Larson, some Public Service Announcements as well as a number of previews for recent and upcoming Sony/Columbia titles.

So, I thought the movie was lame. I didn't really know what to expect going in and afterwards, I really didn't know what I had just watched. It was like an extended episode of Friends - except with different friends that I didn't really like. I somehow imagine the story would play out a lot better on stage - which leads me to believe that the movie is really only worthwhile for fans of the stage production. But, since my girlfriend didn't like it either, what does that really say?
