"Quantum of Solace" is the follow-up to the highly successful "Casino Royale" and Daniel Craig's second go-around as James Bond. The movie picks up moments after the ending of "Royale" and begins with one of the great car chases that you will see in a movie this year. Still heartbroken from the loss of the woman he loved, Bond is determined to get to the bottom of the conundrum that cost Vesper her life. Of course, if that means sleeping with the next hot woman that crosses his path, Bond is more than obliged to do so - twice. He barely has her stank off his hang-low before he is in bed with another stunning beauty. Through all the car chases, beatings, murders, lies, deceit and sex, Bond is led to a vile businessman named Dominic Greene, who is deeply involved in a criminal organization called "Quantum". Greene has plans to help overthrow the Bolivian government and cause major chaos in all of South America - or something like that- but with 007 breathing down his neck, chances are there will be a major monkey wrench thrown into his plans.
If you thought the James Bond in "Casino Royale" was the most brutally violent Bond we have seen yet, then buckle up for "Quantum of Solace". Considering at the beginning of "Royale", Bond only had one kill under his belt, the "Quantum of Solace" Bond would kill at the blink of an eye. There are times during the movie that it seems that any single person who crosses the path of 007 will eventually die a brutal, bloody death. The new Bond is not the Bond who loved the gadgets, a tuxedo and a martini shaken not stirred. The new Bond is a heavy drinker, wants to bang your woman, shoot you through the head and leave your corpse rotting in the desert. He can take one hell of a beating too. In fact, there were many times during the movie that I thought Bond should have looked a lot more beaten up than he actually did. His face should have been black and blue throughout the entire movie but he seemed to have remarkable healing abilities after taking the shit kicking of his life.
Overall, and this is coming from someone who has never been a big Bond fan, I really liked "Quantum of Solace". It's not a perfect movie. I have to admit there were times in the movie I was a bit confused about what the hell was going on, but I'm not sure if that was because of the British accents, the rushed explanations or the fact that you had to use the brain in your head to figure out the story. Despite that, I loved the raw action, the hot chicks and the ruthlessness of 007. I was also a huge fan of "Casino Royale" but with that being said, I have never been a big Bond fan. I've never seen a Sean Connery Bond film. Never seen a Roger Moore one. Saw a Timothy Dalton one and didn't like it. Saw a Remington Steele one and thought it was okay but forgettable. So even though this review isn't coming from a Bond expert, I'm a huge fan of this seemingly new direction that Bond is taking and I think Daniel Craig does an outstanding job as the secret agent. I really hope he comes back for at least one more Bond film.
My only major suggestion for the next movie would be to make improvements in the villain. They've done a great job with the ridiculously hot Bond women in both movies. "Casino Royale" had Le Chiffre, who was an excellent bad guy. Solace's Dominic Greene seemed more like a snivelling little weasel than a legitimate international scoundrel. When it comes to bad guys, I want to have a serious hate-on for the guy (or girl I suppose) but I also want to be able to respect them to a point or at least fear them. I don't respect or fear weasels. Nevertheless, Greene's character doesn't take away too much from "Solace". It's still an entertaining movie and one that I am sure will be as big a hit as "Casino Royale".
