The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
7.5/10 6/10 Liam

In Prime Uma Thurman stars as Rafi, a recently divorced 37-year-old woman who seeks professional help about her relationship problems from Lisa Metzger (Meryl Streep). Of course, things quickly turn around for Rafi when she meets 23-year-old David. Sure, there's a big difference in their ages but hit it off immediately. (Plus, it doesn't hurt that the sex is incredible!) Of course, one of the first people Rafi opens up to about her new relationship is her therapist. At first, she's happy for her patient to have at last found a loving relationship. However, she soon begins to piece things together and realizes that the young in question is her son! Can their relationship survive once they've all realized that Rafi has shared secrets with her therapist that no mother on Earth would want to know about their own son?

Prime is not your typical romantic comedy. It's a romantic comedy for adults - and for me that was the biggest success of the movie. It successfully walks the fine line between being a comedy and being a quasi-serious look at the modern relationship.

Bonus features on this DVD include a commentary with writer-director Ben Younger and producer Jennifer Todd, a few deleted scenes (without commentary), some relatively weak outtakes and finally a too-brief "Prime-Time Players" featurette which looks at the story, the characters and the director. What I really liked about this featurette is how it portrays Younger. He really comes off as a nice guy and a decent filmmaker. After seeing this movie, I'm really interested in seeing what else the guy can do.

If I can say anything it'd be just be careful not to mistake this movie for your typical romantic comedy. Any guy worth the balls in his sack should love an Uma Thurman movie - but I'm not sure so many of those same guys would enjoy her in this more adult-type role. Even though you may have loved Uma in a movie like Kill Bill, this movie is definitely not Kill Bill. To put it another way - your mother might not have liked Kill Bill - but she'd definitely love Prime. So, if you could live with yourself enjoying a movie your mother would love, check this one out.
