Ocean's Twelve was one of the more highly anticipated movies of 2004. First, because of the all-star cast. Names like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Catherine Zeta-Jones. It's not too often that you're not going to find that many big names in a movie. Also, because it was a sequel to a pretty successful film in it's own right - Ocean's Eleven. Ironically, it's also for these reasons that the movie was nowhere near as successful as most had expected. First, because of the all-star cast. People who had seen Ocean's Eleven weren't nearly as enamoured with the cast the second time around. There was a bit of a "been there, done that" feel to it all. And also, because it was follow up to a successful sequel, it fell under a lot more scrutiny. Most felt that, no matter how good, it could never measure up to its predecessor. So, you might be asking what I thought. After all, I'm not here to critique the movie based on everybody else. Well, here goes.
Like most of the film's audience, I was mixed. On the one hand, it was a fun ride. It kept me guessing at every corner as to what would happen next. And it all came together nicely. On the other hand, it didn't measure up to the original. But really, how could it? The magic just didn't seem to be there. As well, with all the characters, it seemed most times that they were trying to spend to much time with each individually - and not enough time with them all together - which left me just a little unsatisfied. And, for a movie starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, it seemed none of them had enough screen time to really be called a "star" of the movie. Does that make sense?
To top it all off, this DVD release offered absolutely no bonus features. Zero. So, if you felt ripped off by the fact that the film's stars didn't appear enough in the movie, you'll definitely feel ripped off by the fact that they didn't even bother to get together to provide some extra DVD content. So, either this stinks of a future "Special Edition" DVD, or the makers of this DVD just didn't care enough to put together a little something extra for the fans.
If I had to choose what I liked less here - the movie or the lack of features - I'd definitely go with the features. Who cares that the movie wasn't as successful as we might've liked. At least they tried. You can't say that about the rest of the DVD.
