In North Country Theron plays Josie Aimes, a woman who leaves her husband and returns home to make a new life for her kids. She takes a job in a mine and is soon subject some humiliating treatment at the hands of her male co-workers. Fed up with the chauvinistic treatment, she brings a sexual harassment lawsuit against the mine. Soon, she's in over her head and she must convince her father, her friends and her own children that she's doing the right thing.
The fact that Charlize Theron got an Oscar nomination out of this movie is beyond me. She was good, but I wouldn't necessarily call her performance special. And I can appreciate the movie's message for women, but the whole story was just so cliched and predictable that I just couldn't be bothered.
Special Features on this DVD include "Stories from the North Country" which begins with real-life stories from the woman the movie is based on and later turns into a making-of feature. This is followed by some deleted scenes and the film's theatrical trailer.
After seeing North Country for the third time, I have the same opinion as I did the first. The movie just didn't do it for me. Check it out if you're interested in the specific story, but if you're looking for a compelling courtroom drama, or even a better movie about women's rights, there are better choices you could make.
