The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
7/10 7/10 Liam

In Jarhead, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Anthony "Swoff" Swofford. The movie follows Swoff from his time in boot camp to being chosen to be a sniper to being sent to the Middle East to fight in the Gulf War. It's during the Gulf War that things take a turn for Swoff as he and the rest of his crew slowly begin to lose it just waiting for the opportunity to see some actual combat. Also starring are Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black, Jamie Foxx and very briefly Chris Cooper.

I'm still not sure how I felt about Jarhead. I really wanted to like it. There were parts of the movie that I really enjoyed but in the end I found myself wondering what the hell just happened.

Bonus features on this DVD begin with "Swoff's Fantasies" which consists of a four different fantasy sequences not featured in the film, each available with optional commentary by director Sam Mendes and editor Walter Murch. Next are the full "News Interviews" segments with footage not shown in the movie, again available with optional commentary by Mendes and Murch. This is followed by 11 deleted scenes running roughly 20 minutes, again with optional commentary. Finally, there are two feature commentaries, the first of which is offered by Sam Mendes and the second by screenwriter William Broyles Jr. and the real-life Anthony Swofford who wrote the book upon which the movie was based.

As I said, I'm not sure how to take this movie. A large part of me is guessing that I was supposed to feel the way I did. Empty. Hollow. Throughout the whole movie, people are waiting for something that never happens. They same for me. At the same time, the movie got me thinking about how much the world sucks given current events. The movie and its story were great, but it made me shake my head and feel generally pissed off at the world. If that's the kind of moviegoing experience that turns your crank, this movie might be right for you. If the evening news depresses you, you might want to think twice.
