Hustle & Flow

The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
8/10 7.5/10 Liam

In Hustle & Flow Terrence Howard play DJay, a pimp who dreams of something bigger. When he hears news that a rapper he knew of back in the day named Skinny Black (Ludacris) has made it big he asks himself "Why not me?". With Skinny coming back into town for the 4th of July, DJay begins to assemble his own demo with hopes of hustling Skinny into getting his voice heard. The movie also stars Taryn Manning as one of the girls that DJay pimps and Anthony Anderson as DJay's friend and producer.

Pimps and rap aren't exactly the things that great movies are made of - but this movie is different. Armed with an uplifting Rocky-like story, an exceptionally solid cast and some catchy music that'll leave you singing for days after, Hustle & Flow is a winner.

Special features on this DVD include a commentary with writer/director Craig Brewer, a nicely-done making-of featurette titled "Behind the Hustle", a "By Any Means Necessary" featurette talking about how the movie got made, "Creating Crunk" about the film's sound and music, a feature looking at the Memphis premiere, some promotional spots and finally some previews for other films from Paramount.

Honestly, I wasn't really expecting a lot from this movie. It just didn't seem like the kind of thing I was interested in. However, after only a few minutes I was hooked and the movie owned me from beginning to end. What I'm trying to say is don't be too quick to dismiss this movie. It's hard out there for a pimp - and if you just give it a shot you just might like it.
