Set in England at the turn of the twentieth century, the story centres on the Butterworth children. When Father is called away to war and Mother goes to nurse the wounded, the five siblings are sent to live in a rattling old mansion in the country with their eccentric Uncle Albert (Kenneth Branagh), weird cousin Horace (Alexander Pownall) and the all-seeing housekeeper Martha (Zoe Wanamaker). The story is told from the point of view of nine-year-old Robert (Freddie Highmore), who is especially distraught about being separated from his father and totally ticked off at being bossed around by his older brother Cyril (Jonathan Bailey). Martha tells the children never to go in the greenhouse. Of course, they do so instantly and discover a door, leading to a tunnel, leading to a beach, where they meet It. An ancient, irritable sand fairy, or Psanmead, It (voiced by the fabulous Eddie Izzard) is eight thousand years old, sarcastic, funny and can grant wishes – a power the children call upon immediately. Mayhem, adventure and misadventure ensue before the children learn that sometimes wishes need to be sensible.
