Eastern Promises is director David Cronenberg's most recent piece of work and undoubtedly one of his finest. Naomi Watts stars as Anna, a London nurse who stumbles across a diary that contains some damning evidence against some Russian mobsters. Her rather simple and understated life is thrown into disarray when she realizes what she holds in her hands. Anna is now forced to deal with a mafia kingpin, his volatile son Kirill (Vincent Cassel) and his loyal but mysterious chauffeur Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen). As to be expected when dealing with organized crime, things do not end in a pleasant manner.

Eastern Promises is one of a handful of solid movies to play at the Toronto International Film Festival this year and to be quite frank, one of the top-notch movies I have seen this year. It features award-worthy performances from both Cassel and Mortensen; an uneasiness throughout the movie that is very suitable for such a film; enough tension and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat; just the right amount of blood and gore to remind you that it's Cronenberg at the helm; and hey, for the women and a significant percentage of the male population out there, there's the famous bath house scene with Viggo's junk flopping about.

Eastern Promises is a movie that seems to have just the right mix of great acting, action, suspense, violence, t&a and weiners to make everyone happy. It's probably not a movie for everyone. Let's face it, Cronenberg isn't a shoe that fits every foot. But chances are if you are a fan of A History of Violence, you will like Eastern Promises. And if you are a fan of Cronenberg, you will love it. It might be worth seeing for Viggo Mortensen's performance alone. Without a doubt it's one that is certain to earn him some serious Oscar consideration come January.
