Doom is the long-awaited screen adaptation of the classic video game of the same name. In the movie an elite military group, including The Rock and Karl Urban, is sent to Mars when a group of scientists send out a distress signal. Once there, they must do battle with various creatures while trying to discover what actually happened to turn this remote research station into the nightmarish hell it has become. They must also contain the situation before it makes its way back to Earth.
Like millions, I played Doom back in the day. I loved the game although I pretty much sucked at it - at least in comparison to my friends who would regularly kick my ass. So, I was kinda/sorta looking forward to this one. Sure, I wasn't expecting too much, but I'm a fan of pretty much anything that The Rock is cooking, so seeing this movie was inevitable. What did I think? Well, for what it was the movie wasn't so bad. If I had to complain I'd say that there were times where I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and for a movie that really shouldn't require any thought, that's not a good thing. Also, the creature effects could've been done a lot better. I really only ever caught fleeting glimpses of the creatures, which didn't really do anything to scare me. Gimme creatures, dammit!! I did, however, enjoy the nice little twist at the end of the movie which I never really saw coming.
Special features on this DVD begin with "Basic Training" which shows the training the cast went though to prepare for the movie. Next, "Rock Formation" looks at the makeup effects that The Rock had to go through in preparation for his role. In "Master Monster Makers" we get a better look at the film's creature effects. The "First Person Shooter Sequence" feature is pretty self-explanatory. In it, we look at how the filmmakers prepared for this scene in the movie. The last two features, "Doom Nation" and "Game On" look at the evolution of the video game and its impact on a generation of gamers. The DVD also includes a Doom 3 XBox Demo.
For me, the movie was good but not great. I'm not exactly sure how you'd make a great movie out of a video game like Doom, but this movie didn't do it. Maybe it was that The Rock wasn't nearly as charismatic as he was in his last few movies. Or maybe it was that I wasn't too thrilled with the movie's effects. In any case, for fans of the game it's worth a glimpse but not much more.
