The Movie The Extras Reviewed by
4.5/10 n/a Liam

Dear Wendy stars Jamie Bell as Dick, a strange young man who lives in a strange old town. One day, Dick is shopping for a birthday present (for a kid he doesn't even like) and he buys a toy gun. However, when he becomes attached to the gun he decides not to give it as a present. (Instead he gives a book that is missing the last few pages?!) When he realizes that the gun is actually real, Dick's story takes a bit of a turn. Along with his new friend Stevie, Dick begins carrying his gun (which he names Wendy) as a means of feeling more secure and confident about himself. With his newfound confidence, he invites a few of the town's other misfits to join his gun-toting club he calls "The Dandies". They all come into their own as part of this club and have a gay-old-time, but things take another turn when circumstances call for The Dandies to brandish their weapons. And once they head down that road, there is no turning back.

Dear Wendy isn't your average movie. These kids and their guns? I found it a little unsettling. And in the end I was left scratching my head. Yeah, it's not a movie that's based on fact, but kids and guns are kinda scary. I enjoyed all the performances and the story was generally strong, but it's not really the movie I would suggest to just anybody. For parents - yeah this one is worth a look to see what might be going on in the mind of your troubled young teen. But if you're a troubled young teen, I wouldn't be rushing to see this movie and getting any foolish ideas in your impressionable young head.

The trailer for this movie really sold me on the story. But I found the last act took a turn and really lost me. Maybe it's because I don't understand the power that comes with carrying a gun. Maybe it's that I don't really care to know. Or maybe I care too much about the kids that are too eager to know.
