In Are We There Yet?, Ice Cube plays Nick Parsons, a man who seeminly has it all. He owns a successful Fine Sports Collectibles business, he's got a sweet new ride and he's got money in his pocket. But, when he sees a fine looking lady across the street (Nia Long), he sees the one thing he's missing. But, there's one problem - and for the man who has everything, it's the one thing he doesn't want - kids.
Going against his better judgement, and even though she says she just wants to be "friends", he pursues her anyways And just how will he suck up to her? When her ex-husband drops out of watching this kids over the New Years holiday, Nick agrees to escort her children on a trip from Portland to Vancouver to spend the holiday with their mother while she's away on business. But, the trip isn't all that easy as the kids do absolutely everything in their power to make Nick miserable - and to keep him away from their mother. Of course, all the trials and tribulations only bring them closer, and in the end, they live happily ever after.
This movie reminded me a lot of Planes, Trains and Automobiles - just for kids. I'm not saying it was as good as - Planes, Trains and Automobiles is still, in my mind, one of the funniest movies of all-time - it just resembled it. A lot. It had a few good gags - and a little bit of heart - but that's about all. It's pretty standard stuff.
Like the movie, the DVD comes with a handful of special features, but it's all pretty standard stuff. Included, we get an audio commentary by director Brian Levant that really wasn't all that bad as he proved to be interesting enough, more than 7 minutes of bloopers, a making-of featurette titled Road Trippin', a fun tour of Nick's store in the movie, a deleted scene (without commentary) and some storyboard comparisons.
So, if you're in the mood for a fun little family comedy, this is the movie for you. (Although I know a parent who let their 4-year old watch it - and I think that's a little too young for this movie.) However, if you're like Nick from the movie, and can't stand little kids, watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles instead.
