Interview
- Brett Ratner
"Great Expectations" by Erin Cullin |

Sometimes, when you give someone a chance
against all expectations, they turn around and surprise you. No doubt,
that is how Universal Pictures is feeling today.
When I first read that Brett Ratner had been tagged to direct Red
Dragon, I thought, "Brett Ratner? Isn't he the guy who directed
Rush Hour? How on earth is he going to pull this one off?" I am
sure that I was not the only one.
I had visions of Hannibal Lecter delivering one-liners from his
glass-enclosed cell. I had visions of Ralph Fiennes or Edward Norton
attempting choreographed martial arts moves. I know that these things
weren't in the trailer, but I was still expecting to see them. I cringed
as I thought of these things. It was not good.
I carried these thoughts with me into the theatre when I attended the
screening of Red Dragon. I settled in with my popcorn, preparing for the
worst. My mind drifted, and I began to think about the interviews that I
was scheduled to conduct the next day with Ratner, Anthony Hopkins,
Ralph Fiennes...how was I going to face these people after watching this
campy farce?
Now, I am the first to admit that I am something of a "movie
snob". I prefer dramatic, arty movies. I am more of a Red Violin,
English Patient, End of the Affair type of movie patron. I have never
seen Rush Hour. I have never seen Money Talks. In short, I didn't think
that this movie was going to be for me.
Boy, was I wrong. By the end of the opening sequence of the movie, I was
hooked. I was enjoying this movie. From there, I didn't look back.
