To boldly go where no one has gone
before.
Part of the opening words for the original series, Star Trek has
always been about the exploration of space and the benefits that can
be obtained through the fruits of co-operation. While this may hold
true in that future, unfortunately the same can't be said for the DVD.
Here they tread the path most common.
The movie itself is good. While it might not be for the non-fan it
offers just enough action, drama and memories to satisfy the regular
fan. And while it tended to lose some of it's dramatic nature on the
smaller screen, it made up for it by allowing us to focus in on the
chemistry between the crew that made it so successful as a TV series.
Yes there is a little rust here too but nice to see one more time.
Where the DVD comes out somewhat flat is the extras. That's not to say
the DVD is horrible. It's just that, considering that it is supposed
to be the last Next Generation movie made, it just didn't seem to wrap
things up. There's nothing to send the Enterprise into the warp field
sunset.
Of the extras, the deleted scenes were decent. I especially liked the
conversation between Data and Picard over a glass of wine. That's one
scene that really nailed the camaraderie that existed between the crew
and should even have been included into the movie itself. Of the
others, they ranged from adequate to unnecessary. The director's
commentary was rather typical but did offer a few bits of insight here
and there. What I really would have liked to hear was a commentary by
the cast on the movie. That could have offered greater dimension to
the story and how they felt about their journey ending. The
documentaries really just seemed to be filling space.
Overall, I was somewhat disappointed in the DVD. If this was going to
be the last time we saw the Enterprise crew I wanted something
special, something to pay homage to the cast and crew. I didn't get
it.
