The Sweetest Thing is a new take on an
old genre. It is part romantic comedy/part gross comedy/part buddy
movie. However, it involves a group of girls, instead of a bunch of
guys that you'd normally find in these roles. The movie is about
Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) and her friends, who are party girls
that use guys for their own pleasure and toss them aside. That is,
until Christina meets Peter (Thomas Jane), with whom she quickly falls
in love.
The movie has a number of parts that made me laugh out loud, but on
the whole, I found The Sweetest Thing to be a little disjointed. The
slapstick comedy stuff was really good, but the romantic parts just
fell flat. There was no chemistry between Diaz and Jane and it
ultimately foiled the movie. I did enjoy a lot about the movie though,
especially the scenes involving the girlfriends interacting (Diaz,
Christina Applegate and Selma Blair). They really clicked.
The Sweetest Thing is presented in both 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
and 1.33:1 Full Screen format. The sound is presented in Dolby Digital
5.1.
The extras for the DVD are pretty sparse. There is a behind-the-scenes
featurette called "Politically Erect" that is brief and only
mildly entertaining. There is a second mock featurette about the
film's writer, Nancy M. Pimental. This one is really bad and really
boring - a giant waste of time. There are storyboard comparisons for
two of the movie's scenes, and well as trailers. I found it
interesting watching the trailer for The Sweetest Thing's and noticing
how much was not actually in the movie!?! Finally, there is a
commentary track featuring director Roger Kumble, writer Nancy
Pimental and well as 3 producers. They seem to get along really well,
with a lot of joking and taking shots at each other. This made for one
of the more entertaining commentaries that I've listened to. The DVD
is surprisingly void of deleted scenes most likely to be found on the
un-rated version as evidenced by the numerous references in the disc's
commentary track.
The Sweetest Thing is worth seeing for the plethora of sex jokes that
I've grown to love from movies like American Pie. However, don't
expect much from the romantic end. It is a big disappointment.
